Description
The Mind Behind Bestevaer
“Most designs in nature meet what we try to accomplish in our work as boat designers. Beautiful, functional design. Take the Albatros, for instance. A fantastic bird to see, determined by technical and physical requirements. The way power, finesse, efficiency, functionality, and aesthetics come together is fascinating. A wonderful collaboration between these components. To me, that’s elegance. Why do you think one of the Bestevaer sailing boats is called Albatros?
Elegance is a feeling. An emotion. The appeal of a boat is an important factor in the design process. We also call this the ‘rowing factor’. Would you row an extra lap around the boat to see how beautiful she is? But from a yacht designers’ perspective, elegance never derives from its aesthetics only. It’s the interaction with the functionality that makes a yacht elegant. A yacht that doesn’t sail well can never be beautiful. Neither can a purely functional design. It is the symbiosis of efficiency, technology, and aesthetics. It’s about determining the right priorities. We never try to fit in as much interior volume or as many cabins possible. We choose finesse. Beautiful lines. A sharp bow. A simple shape, rounded corners. But no frills. Unpainted beauty in its simplicity. And at the same time, we create seaworthiness, good behavior at sea, a good daily average, the ability to speed up under specific conditions and, last but not least, good ergonomics for the crew.” ~ Gerard Dijkstra
Dutch-born Gerard Dijkstra is a world-renowned racing sailor, the founder of Dykstra Naval Architects and the creative mind behind the Bestevaer family of expedition sailing yachts. Originally designed to satisfy his own sailing needs, the Bestevaer family with its distinct features is now extended with a motor yacht. Elegance plays a significant role in Dijkstra’s designs. He emphasizes it cannot be captured into words. And then proves himself wrong.
Bestevaer 45 S/Y
An aluminum yacht designed for short-handed, long-distance voyaging in cold climates, but equally at home in the tropics. The 45 S/Y is the successor of the legendary Bestevaer II and is known for its comfort, strength and performance. She is fast in strong breezes but is able to maintain a good turn of speed in both light and moderate conditions, a result of her moderate displacement and large efficient sail area. The 45 S/Y was nominated for the European Sailing Yacht of the Year Award.
Key Features
- Fold down swimming platform – Lower the manually operated swim platform to extend the level floor up to the waterline. Unrestricted views over the water, dock a tender, or take a refreshing morning nap
- Lines led aft to cockpit – All sail handling operations from one central position in the cockpit, including reefing. No need to go forward on the deck in heavy weather, perfect and safe for single or short-handed use
- Protected rudder stock and engine – The rudder stock and engine are placed above the waterline in a watertight compartment, ensuring use of the engine should water ingress occur in the aft compartment
- Enhanced comfort – The tiller is standard, a cockpit over three meters long and a superstructure that offers plenty of protection
- Sheltered cockpit – Feel secure and safe under sail and at sea. The deep, safe and sheltered cockpit with a fixed dodger and integral pilot house provides shelter from spray and wind
- Pilothouse with 360-degree view – Integral to the Bestevaer design is the pilothouse with an all-around view. It enables navigation of the yacht in the coldest of areas from inside a warm and protected environment
- Aluminum from A to Z – The hull, pilothouse, superstructure and rudder are fully constructed from aluminum. A material known for being strong, light weight, low maintenance, environmentally friendly and incredibly good looking
- Fully ballasted keels – Choose between a fixed or centerboard keel. Both keels are fully ballasted at a ratio of almost 40% ensuring excellent sailing qualities
- Safety first – Integrated chainplates, bulkheads, aluminum bollards, diesel tanks, exterior handholds and thru-hull fittings. Strength, safety and reliability are what make Bestevaer stand out
- Watertight bulkheads – Safety is paramount on the water. To avoid ingress of water, the yacht is fitted with 2 watertight bulkheads in aft and bow, equaling 3 watertight compartments. For those looking for extra security an additional masthead bulkhead with watertight bulkhead can be added
- Ample storage space – With a large sail locker in the bow and deep lazarette’s in the aft there’s ample space for bikes, toys, tools and provisions. Additionally, one of the interior aft cabins can be converted to a functional storage room
