DETAILED SPECIFICATION

1. CONSTRUCTION 

 

HULL NUMBER

Oyster 885/03.

 

HULL CONSTRUCTION

Special NPG gelcoat, laminated using a combination of vinylester and polyester resins. The laminate material comprises of a combination of E-glass, Kevlar and carbon fibre.

The topside laminate above the waterline incorporates a high-tech, foam-cored structure in an E-glass/carbon for additional strength, stiffness and insulation.

Below the waterline, the hull features a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate with an Aramid/Kevlar layer reinforced with a matrix of stringers and floors, combined with BS1088 standard marine-ply and composite cored structural bulkheads. 

 

HULL FINISH

White hull with cove line in ‘Agate Grey’ and double boot top lines in ‘Blue Grey.’

Topsides, brightwork and superstructure scheduled for repaint, November 2025.

 

DECK CONSTRUCTION

Raised saloon deck, moulded in GRP with a foam-cored structure.

In load bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load bearing fittings have backing plates.

 

DECK FINISH

The weather deck, cockpit seats and sole areas are finished with quarter-sawn teak planking. Teak decks coated with three applications of SEMCO sealant (refreshed periodically to maintain ‘as delivered appearance’.

The deck edge incorporates a bulwark that has a clean GRP finish, giving a modern and stylish ‘rolled’ edge, enhancing the yacht’s visual appearance with a graceful sheer line.

Stanchions and cleats are mounted on the bulwark. Internal scupper drains are installed along the deck edge.

Fuel and water filler fittings are positioned on the cap rail, thus keeping the teak decked area clean and clutter free.

All locker hinges and catches are recessed into the teak planking, where appropriate.

 

KEEL

High-performance bulb (HPB) external lead keel.

 

RUDDER

Twin rudders with substantial GRP foam-filled blades bonded to composite rudder stocks. The rudder stocks have top and bottom bearings.

 

STERN DESIGN

The stern design incorporates a custom watertight flip-down transom door that creates a bathing and boarding platform that is especially useful for bathing and is trimmed with laid teak. 

A gateway through the pushpit, customised with full width teak transom stairs gives access to a built-in stairway leading down to the bathing platform when open. When closed the platform forms part of the transom external surface for a clean and uncluttered look.

The boarding platform incorporates a removable stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with oval treads. 

 

EURCD 

Built to comply with the requirements for Category A – Ocean.

At over 24m length overall the Oyster 885 falls outside the scope of the EURCD, however the hull design and structure for this vessel have been designed using the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) – High Speed and Light Craft Rule.

 

CHARTER CODING

Built to MCA Category 2 with all associated safety equipment fitted. Coding lapsed. 

 

2. DECK LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENT 

 

ANCHOR

81kg (179lb approximately) CQR anchor.

120m of 14mm Cromox G6+ stainless steel chain fitted to match with the windlass, September 2023. Spec’d to allow for retrofit electric polishing to repel clay residue. 

Stainless steel kedge anchor with 10m of 14mm stainless steel chain and 105m of 24mm Octoplait.

Locker within the foredeck for anchor chain stowage, with hinged lid and flush type locking device. Removable partition at forward end of anchor locker for kedge warp stowage.

 

WINDLASS

Lewmar V8 vertical, chain gypsy, hydraulic anchor windlass installed under deck and within the anchor chain locker. Two-way and operated by adjacent foot switch controls or a plug-in hand-held remote.

A secondary hydraulic Sanguineti ‘warping’ retracting capstan is installed on the foredeck for controlling mooring lines.

 

DECK ACCESS

Pair of gateway stanchions with stainless steel hinged ladders with oval treads for boarding from dinghy or dock, which close up to form the side gates.

Stainless steel port and starboard bulwark tread plates at side gateways engraved with yacht’s name.

Gate to pushpit.

Stainless steel removable boarding ladder mounted on swim platform.

Hydraulic retracting passerelle that extends from the transom, with teak covered walkway and a system of stanchion handrails.

 

HATCHES/WINDOWS

Custom fully counter-balanced companionway hatch system, with electrically powered sliding mechanism, which in an emergency can be operated manually whilst heeling. 

7 x Solimar flush accommodation deck hatches. Aft cabin hatch teaked over on port side, and fitted with Oceanair Skyscreen.

2 x Solimar flush storage area deck hatches.

8 x direct bonded, frameless deck saloon windows in toughened smoked glass.

8 x direct bonded, frameless non-opening hullports.

12 x vertical direct bonded, frameless feature hullports to owner’s and aft guest cabins.

All forward coachroof hatches hinged at forward end and portholes MCA compliant with deadlights for each.

 

CANVASWORK

All canvaswork in WeatherMax ‘Beige’ acrylic, unless otherwise stated: (all canvaswork scheduled to be replaced Winter 2025). 

Large acrylic fold-down sprayhood fitted over custom stainless steel hoops and incorporating see-through panels in its forward portion with leather covered stainless steel grab rail to the aft end. A dedicated locker with hinged lid within the deck saloon roof provides sprayhood stowage.

Acrylic bimini with windows under boom lights and over helm positions. Bimini frame designed so helm section can be rolled forward and zipped into a pocket on the underside of the cockpit section. Zip on mesh side screens to provide partial shade and air flow.

Foredeck sun awning. Boom awnings and mesh side screens.

Padded cockpit table cover. Covers for pedestals, steering wheels, winches, windlass, and RIB.

Two custom roll-up deck cushions. 

Cockpit, pushpit, and helm seat cushions in closed cell foam with Silvertex ‘Ice’ acrylic covers. Scatter cushions. 

 

DECK PLUMBING

Hot and cold freshwater deck shower within the transom.

Forward cold freshwater anchor/deck wash outlet with hose. Additional freshwater outlet with hose and fittings in cockpit.

Jabsco Ultra saltwater washdown/fire pump with pressure relief valve and foot switch on foredeck. Pump located in sail locker with outlet on deck by pullpit foot. Short and long hoses. 

Spot Zero reverse osmosis system fitted in lazarette, plumbed to freshwater manifold in engine room (tank side of the pumps) to treat all shore water that is bunkered.

 

COCKPIT

The cockpit is split into separate guest, steering/crew and owner’s areas. The guest cockpit is over 3m long and self-draining. Two pairs of flush waterproof loudspeakers are mounted in the guest cockpit, with remote control unit.

A clear walkway gives access from the companionway to the helm positions and side decks.

The helm position has twin custom GRP steering pedestals. Stainless steel drinks holders to pedestals and at companionway.

Pair of stainless steel upholstered backrest rails fitted at the helm positions. 

Aft of the helm positions is a large aft deck and sunbathing area.

Access to bathing platform. 

Wichard folding pad eyes as harness attachment points. 

 

COCKPIT TABLE

Gloss varnished teak-topped cockpit table with stainless steel frame to starboard, which houses a cockpit refrigerator beneath, cooled via a Frigomatic refrigeration unit. This table is permanently installed and has seating on three sides. 

To port are further cockpit seats.

 

STEERING

Twin custom GRP steering pedestals, each incorporating a 1.20m diameter stainless steel wheel, friction brake and three-bearing pedestal steering unit.

Leather covers to steering wheels.

Electronic single lever engine control fitted to the top of the port pedestal.

Emergency steering utilizes the autopilot hydraulic ram via a manually operated rotary pump.

3. RIG AND SAIL HANDLING

 

MAST AND RIGGING

Upgrade to double-headed rig with reacher and blade. 

Rig fully inspected, with NDT testing and tune, April 2023. 

Standing rigging servicing and replacement scheduled for Winter 2025. 

Hall Spars carbon fractional spar with Antal sliders for full-batten mainsail with tapered top mast, and carbon Park Avenue style boom - deep section incorporating Spinlock rope clutches for reef lines, 2:1 mainsail halyard.

Upgrade to 4-spreader rig. Rig configured for fully-battened mainsail system with lazy jacks and slab reefing, including three sets of reefing control lines (3 x tack lines and 3 x leach lines).

Upgrade to hydraulic halyard tensions for both headsails with deck buttons at mast base for adjustment.

Upgrade to 220V electric hydraulic mast jacks.

Both finished in black anodising and stainless steel with a manual backup option. Dual controls for each headsail furling function enable the sails to be furled from either side of the cockpit.

WINCHES

2 x Lewmar 88/3 SHST three speed, hydraulic drive, stainless steel, self-tailing primary winches.

2 x Lewmar 77/2 SHST two speed, hydraulic drive, stainless steel GY, self-tailing secondary winches.

1 x Lewmar CRW3500 hydraulic captive reel mainsheet winch, mounted below deck.

2 x Lewmar 77/2 SHST hydraulic drive, stainless steel GY, self-tailing halyard winches. Push button control on pedestal, with finger guard to prevent accidental activation.

SPINNAKER GEAR

Single carbon spinnaker pole stowed vertically on mast. Package includes chainplates, deck fittings, halyard, topping lift, pole lift, single sheet, guy, fore guy and all required blocks.

Spinnaker pole has a sliding track on its side to allow spinnaker halyard to pass through car for use as a tender launch system.

4. INTERIOR

 

GENERAL

Twelve berths in six cabins, plus additional Pullman berth in aft port guest cabin. Five heads/showers. Sea berths have fitted Dacron lee screens with lanyards to flush removable-eye mounting plates. All berths, including doubles, are counted as sea berths and doubles have split mattresses allowing a central lee cloth to provide the necessary support and separation.

Interior joinery finished in quarter-sawn teak with limed Osmo snow finish. Designed to be modern and coordinated, whilst remaining practical and durable at sea. Essential features include sculpted fiddles and grab rails, ‘shadow-gap’ joints between panels, and solid ‘framed’ styled doors with laid veneers and soft close seals. All drawers use quality metal runners with a soft-close feature, which give extremely smooth operation.

Locker doors are veneered on both sides, with flush fitting chrome catches. Lockers are fitted with shelves and fiddles, as appropriate.

Bulkheads in the owner’s stateroom, between the lazarette and the guest cabins, along with the lower saloon bulkhead adjoining the skipper’s cabin are acoustically insulated using a cavity system filled with mineral wood. Care and attention has been paid to the positioning and mounting of equipment to reasonably minimize machinery sound within the accommodation areas.

Cabin sole in fumed oak V-grooved plank style (refinished 2021). Carpet in owner’s stateroom and three guest cabins. Druggets for sole boards in WeatherMax ‘Sand’ with non-slip backing. Saloon and aft companionway druggets upgraded to prevent marking on soleboards. 

Galley work surfaces in ‘Midnight Sky’ gloss finish Avonite with fiddles and radiused upstands.

Each head compartment is fitted out with a washbasin under mounted to a satin finished Avonite surface. Hansgrohe quality mixer taps and thermostatic shower controls are installed, together with towel rail, toothbrush tumbler, soap dispenser, toilet roll holder and toilet brush. Guest and Owner’s heads have Dornbracht two-hole single lever basin mixer taps. Sealand electric Vacuflush toilets in white porcelain with freshwater flush, each with its own pump and night switch.

Headlinings in a combination of ‘off white’ and ‘Savannah Oat’ vinyl. Saloon table cover in padded ‘off white’ headlining vinyl.

Saloon upholstery in Zinc - Element ‘Sand’ with piped cushions for backrests and seat bases. Backboard to walkway seating covered with faux leather round to galley. Stud work on kick panels and arm rest. Lower saloon upholstery, and navigator’s seat in JMT ‘Shargreen Smoke’ leather. Crew covers for upper and lower saloon seating areas in JAB ‘Sailor’ material.

Electric Roman blinds to windows in owner’s stateroom and all guest cabins. Oceanair Skysol blinds in forward port and starboard crew cabins. Oceanair Venetian blinds in heads.

UTILITY AREA

To starboard aft of the galley and just under the forward end of the saloon is a utility area that houses the refrigerator, freezer unit, and laundry equipment.

 

LOWER SALOON/PLAY ROOM/TWIN CABIN

Entertainment/seating area with L-shaped settee that converts into two berths. Sliding door separates lower saloon from utility/galley area.

TV on bulkhead, and Sony PlayStation in aft outboard locker. Headlining speakers, plus subwoofer under sofa. Apple TV box.

 

ENGINE ROOM

Accessed via a door in the galley area, the engine room is immaculate with standing room, workbench, plus impeccable installation and labelling. Built of Barrifloor (or equivalent) sound insulating plywood. All access panels are fitted with rubber sealing strips to minimise noise, and are secured by positive catches.

Surfaces faced with white painted, sound absorbing, aluminium panels. Behind this is a dense layer of mineral wool, followed by the high mass Barrifloor plywood layer.

Both engine and generators have anti-vibration mounts specifically engineered to reduce transmitted vibration into the boat.

220V/24V lighting, and extractor fans ducted to the exterior. In addition, it is fitted with a heavy-duty air intake system to provide a constant through-flow of air, which is drawn in from the exterior. 

 

NAVIGATION AREA

Situated to port and forward of the upper saloon the aft facing chart table is customised around the flush mounted electronics and navigational equipment, which is strategically-sited within Novasuede ‘Fawn’ covered fascia panels, with concealed lighting.

Small stainless steel support stay fitted to chart table lid. Provision for stowage of Admiralty size, half-folded charts. Bookshelf. Stowage for navigational books and almanacs.

 

UPPER SALOON

Access to the saloon from the cockpit is via a sliding, mechanically assisted, smoked glazed entry system and a set of timber steps with stainless steel handrails. The saloon is extremely light and airy with windows providing an almost panoramic view of the exterior.

Featuring a large square shaped settee to starboard with expandable table to provide comfortable seating for eight people. The table can convert from a large dining table to a lower and smaller occasional/coffee table. Table pedestal casing clad in ‘Shargreen Smoke’ leather. Removable button stool with backrest, located in sole socket, stowage under sole beneath table.

To port is a large storage and serving area, with ice maker, and mirror finished drinks/glasses locker with automatic light. Drinks fridge incorporated into forward locker space. Port side joinery unit fronts in ‘Shargreen Smoke’ leather.

Forward steps lead down from the raised saloon to the navigation area, lower saloon and forward crew area, whilst another set leads aft to the central passageway and VIP guest cabins and Owner’s stateroom beneath the cockpit.

 

PORT AFT TWIN (CONVERTIBLE TO A DOUBLE) GUEST CABIN

FUEL

3,500 litres approximately (770 Imp gallons/925 US gallons) in two GRP tanks. Fuel is transferred to the main tank using a 100 litre per minute Jabsco sliding vane pump.

TANK TENDER GAUGES

Offshore Instruments tank monitoring system for fuel and water tanks.

 

HOT WATER 

From two insulated approximately 93 litre (20 Imp gallon/25 US gallon) tanks heated by the engine’s heat exchanger, or by thermostatically-controlled 220V, 2kW immersion heater elements powered by the generator or dockside power. One tank serves the area forward of the engine room and the other aft of the engine room. Each tank is fitted with a thermostatic safety blender valve. 

Aft chlorifrier, new September 2024. Forward scheduled for replacement, Winter 2025.  

 

PRESSURISED HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEM

Hot and cold freshwater system based on a high capacity water pump with PEX/PBT pipework and fittings.

Second freshwater pump with valving, so that normally the aft end of the boat runs off one pump, and the forward end off the other, whilst in an emergency the entire boat can run off either pump.

 

HOLDING TANKS 

Two central GRP ‘black water’ holding tanks installed for each of the five heads and plumbed for gravity discharge, with additional ability to pump out from on deck via flush-mounted deck fittings.

GREY WATER

There are five grey water ‘sump’ tanks located within the boat, each fitted with a Johnson float switch and pump, giving automatic evacuation of all showers and washbasins.

The galley sinks pump directly overboard via a macerator and Whale Gulper pumps,  activated by a Vimar rocker switch. There is a further shared automatic discharge grey water tank for the dishwasher and washing machine.

 

MANIFOLD SYSTEM

Bronze manifold system for seawater inlets to reduce through-hull fittings.
