Description

Most experienced sailors will agree that the Valiant 42’ is counted amongst the best looking sailboats ever designed & built. It has the looks of a serious blue water cruiser, & was a real show-stopper when this Bob Perry design first was introduced some 40 years ago.

The design concept for the legendary Valiant 42 evolved from the proven lines of famous double ender’s dating back into the earliest history, of mans interest in crossing oceans, including the iconic Viking built vessels renowned for their rugged & dependable sailing characteristics. With the Valiant 42, the designer has incorporated modern sailing performance for fast, safe & easily manageable passages, by a shorthanded crew.

Spanning some 4 decades of production, the reputation, record of the strength & quality of Valiant Yachts speaks for itself.  Offshore passagemakers are often subjected to more  abuse, stress, pounding, rig loads & overall grief, than the usual, typical production sailboats would ever encounter.

Valiant holds the unique position of having accumulated more short-handed & single-handed circumnavigations & major bluewater passages, then any other brand of yacht ever built. Today, Valiant 40’s & 42’s are found in every major sailing venue in the world & are among the most coveted & proven seaworthy yachts. This record speaks for itself!

This Valiant 42, “CHIMERA”, is a very special & unique yacht as it features a Ketch Rig, considered by many, as the most manageable configuration for shorthanded sailing.  This two owner, American built semi-custom, world class cruising yacht, “CHIMERA” is designed & equipped for worldwide cruising. The proven Ketch Rig opens access to greater areas due to the reduced bridge clearance. One can even cross the state of Florida from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico....something not available to most yachts of this size.  This very special Valiant 42 has been maintained & cared for, by knowledgeable & experienced owners to the highest of yacht standards.

Under sail or power, when you pull into an anchorage, or a world famous yacht club, “CHIMERA” will be the center of attention. Most boats, with their conventional styling, come & go virtually unnoticed. There is a saying in the aircraft industry that “good looks are good aerodynamics”, & a vessel that looks fast probably is. The designer had the sense to design a great looking yacht & he also had the sense to execute one that performs well indeed.  Sailing is an aesthetic endeavor as much as anything else. You are only here once, so don't settle for a bland, ugly or boring boat….enjoy the fame, the sailing abilities & the beauty & comfort of a Valiant…especially this ONE OF A KIND KETCH RIGGED, CUSTOM DESIGNED & CUSTOM BUILT Valiant 42 … the PRISTINE, LOADED, & TURN KEY, “CHIMERA”

THE FIRST OWNERS WORDS:

At the time I first thought about building a serious cruising sailboat, I was living on the Gulf Coast of Florida (and I still am). I knew I wanted something in the 40’ range that my wife  &  I could live aboard but easily shorthand. I was familiar with the proven ocean going capability of Valiant Yachts & liked the no nonsense design, but I had a problem. A great number of the bridges on the Gulf Coast are still 50’ clearance. A 40’ LOA & a 50’ bridge clearance don’t mix very well in the sailing world.

After putting the project on the shelf for a while, I began to read Beth Leonard’s articles about the pleasure &  shorthand capability of the ketch rigs. Her boat “Silk” was a 37-foot ketch rig & Beth & her now husband, Evans Starzinger, sailed Silk around the world (in all types of conditions) with great accolades for the rig. Hmm… Maybe this was a solution for my clearance problem & at the same time I would be gaining the many advantages of a ketch rig… but Valiant only manufactured sloops!  Well, I guess I called Rick Worstell (owner of Valiant Yachts)  on the right day, because he was very interested in the project. In fact, he told me that Robert Perry had originally designed the Valiant to be manufactured as a sloop OR as a ketch. Nobody had ever asked!

IN THE WORDS OF A PROFESSIONAL DELIVERY CAPTAIN:

In the words of experienced Maryland delivery skipper, Captain Jeremy Hopkins,   who has had the opportunity to have sailed close to 4000 miles aboard “CHIMERA,”…..not only is this yacht one of the best maintained & equipped yachts I have ever sailed, it is also one of the most comfortable & manageable yachts as well....I consider the Ketch Rig to be  the best choice for true offshore sailors.  It provides a maximum choice of sail combinations to meet the any challenge one could encounter with any crew.”

According to the legendary yacht designer, William Atkin “The ketch rig is the kind of boat that behaves herself in rough water & can be depended upon to sail herself”  & amongst the notable “luminaries” who have owned, cruised tens of thousands of offshore miles around the world & continue to say the ketch rigged sailboat is THE BEST SAILBOAT for world cruising, are:

George Day - editor & owner of Blue Water Cruising Magazine, Mason 43 Ketch

Bob Bitchin – editor & owner of Latitudes & Attitudes Magazine, Formosa 68 Ketch

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Valiant 42…what more is there to simply say but…

A Cruising Favorite … HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

There is no substitute for THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY.  Ask any Valiant owner & they will tell you that they are glad they made the Valiant their choice…and as a Valiant owner himself, the Listing Agent thoroughly AGREES! After all, veteran sailors who sail the oceans of the world, have been choosing Valiant Yachts for over a quarter of a century, as their yacht of choice for bluewater, world wide cruising.

The owners of “CHIMERA” were able to tap into over 25 years of priceless input & perspective, from other Valiant owners who have been sailing the world, regarding the best interior layout & systems that work offshore & in port.

Along with that information, the steady hand & experience of Bob Perry in creating the FIRST Valiant 42’ ketch rig & also having a great deal of personal sailing experience, they helped create a yacht with the term we have coined…THE SAILORS CHOICE! As an offshore yacht that is safe, fast, & manageable, even with a shorthanded crew, she epitomizes state-of-the-art performance, & now the dream of offshore passagemaking, can come true for you! The true passion for owning a Valiant of the highest caliber is now within your reach, with this one-owner, custom built SIDE ENTRY Valiant 42!

Targeted for shorthanded sailing & BRIDGE FRIENDLY NAVIGATION, “CHIMERA” boasts a full complement of oversize self-tailing offshore winches, easy access to tanks, pumps & engine & the interior design was engineered around the “human factor”, for a “couples boat”.

The listing broker, having sailed some 60,000 offshore miles in his Valiant, said “some things never go out of style…good design does not become obsolete…it evolves to a higher level”.  This statement was so true of the evolution of Valiant, that the Valiant factory chose to include it as a headline in their brochure for the Valiant 42 on which this yacht was featured.

“CHIMERA” is the perfect example of a classic Perry offshore design & she is one of the rare, models & most beautiful Valiant 42s to come on the market. “CHIMERA” is in STELLAR  &  IMMACULATE  condition.

Introduced in 1992, the Valiant 42 is the evolutionary successor to the legendary Valiant 40. Featuring the classic, sea kindly Robert Perry design tumblehome double-ended hull form, bulwarks, rubrail dorades, opening ports, oversized rod rigging & superb quality construction, the Valiant 42 is built to world class standards. Performance, safety & comfort have become synonymous with Valiant & in no small way, are responsible for its success. To our knowledge,  Sail Magazine’s acclaim &  selection of the Valiant 40 (the predecesaor of the Valiant 42) as the Offshore Cruiser of the Decade, is unprecedented….it was however, UNEQUIVOCALLY EARNED!

The Valiant 42 is a modern classic & “CHIMERA” is one of the most customized Valiants ever built !!! With proven performance spanning three decades, Valiants continue to be the choice of serious sailors who sail the oceans of the world & this beautiful yacht is equipped for such a voyage with “the best of the best”.

Valiant owners are unanimous in their conviction that their Valiants are exceptional bluewater passagemakers. If you're looking for a new Valiant, but don't want the wait nor the expense, you can save significant dollars with “CHIMERA”.  The interior wood is beautiful cherry with enclosed cabinetry, hidden hinges & a large, centerline drop-leaf teak table, with “L” shaped settee to port.  Valiant's semi-custom interiors use only the finest quality materials & craftsmanship.

With her excellent compliment of electronics, an above-average equipment list, custom interior, light use, excellent maintenance, the ambiance of all the creature comforts of home, “CHIMERA” is a MUST-SEE for the bluewater cruising couple!!!

She is, without a doubt, the most gorgeous Valiant ever shown & was featured as the "Showboat" for Valiant at the St. Petersburg boat show & met rave reviews there for her beautiful hull color & fine interior.  She is complete & ready to go cruising !!!

Bob Perry summed it up best when he wrote “The new VALIANT 42 exemplifies what a proven hull can do when total attention is given to offshore experience by owners, manufactures dedication to the product & a designers ability & desire to listen to those inputs!” “CHIMERA” is a remarkable example of what thoughtful evolutionary development can produce…NO BRAG…JUST FACT! YOU SHOULD FIND OUT WHY!!!

Accommodations

With over 6’5” headroom or better, throughout the boat & storage capacity which can only be noted as “incredible”, “CHIMERA” is a highly customized & styled yacht with the heritage of the finest features found in the most sought after yachting accommodations; bright, well ventilated & finished in furniture quality Cherry.

Her MAIN FEATURE is the much sought after, PULLMAN BERTH forward & custom built cabinetry & features throughout this magnificent yacht…you will note she FAR exceeds the standard layout.  She was built with the much sought after Side Entry which offers the most spacious  liveaboard-friendly interior of the Valiant 42’s.

Next aft to Port, is the Pullman double bunk.  The Pullman berth sports abundant drawers under, bookshelves over, & superior ventilation with a hatch directly over the berth & a fan. Directly across from the Pullman berth you will note additional storage & hanging lockers.  Below the bunk there are 4 large drawers & an opening locker. To starboard, directly across, you will find a large hanging locker with shelves behind & another large cupboard forward of the hanging locker with three large shelves.  This entire stateroom is separated from the main saloon by a cherry-wood door.

The overhead is drop-down Formica panels with Cherry battens for ease of equipment installation & inspection of below deck fittings.  The beautiful joinery work is unsurpassed. More importantly, the interiors are built like the exteriors, STRONG. All furniture is fiberglass bonded to the hull & deck for maximum strength. The interior is finished with a satin varnish with high gloss accents on the trim.

The main salon is amidships with a large L-shaped settee to port (that converts to a double berth),  & large comfortable settee starboard.

There are built-in storage cabinets outboard on each side of the cabin, entertainment center & bookshelves &  extensive storage behind & over settees. Oversized hatches & numerous opening ports, as well as stainless steel dorade vents, provide ventilation & light below.

Aft of the main salon & to port, is the classic “wrap around”  “U” shape configured, offshore safe galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside, with drawers, lockers, large dry storage bin, built in microwave, & large, frig & freezer.

There are 2-deep stainless steel sinks, fully gimbaled stove & generous counter space. Over the galley is a large opening hatch for light & ventilation, also, there are two opening ports over the stove area for added ventilation.

Opposite the galley is a large, proper forward-facing navigation station with a large chart table & tremendous room for electronics & navigation equipment. Again, storage is tremendous in this area with locker under nav table top, room under chart table top for charts & large storage area under nav seat.

Aft of the nav station are three lockers, with the forward being a large pantry, next aft is a large locker with custom shelving & storage & most aft, is the wet hanging locker.

The “proper offshore cruising  head” is located just port of the companionway, a feature which salty, ocean-experienced sailor will much appreciate.  The  enclosed head is aft of the galley & has an ensuite shower, storage bins, fan, opening port, hatch, laundry hamper & removable shelf area for access to mechanical area (oil and fuel filters).

The cabin sole, a further example of Valiant quality, is planked & plugged 1/2" solid teak with inlaid poplar strips finish-sanded & sealed with (4) coats of Varathane.

There is a teak grate built into the teak & holly floor at the bottom of the companionway, to catch water from wet gear. With the wet locker & teak draining grate, which drains to the bilge, all foul weather gear is kept aft & away from the main living quarters. All locker doors are ventilated.  At the bottom of the companionway stairs is engine room access and additional storage behind bottom step.

There are 10 Stainless steel opening ports with screens & 5 opening deck hatches, plus the companionway hatch, with screens, which provides a tremendous amount of light & superior cross ventilation.  There are also 2 dorade vents W/S.S. sheet protection rails installed. Below deck ventilation far surpasses the standards in the industry.
