Description
Ocean 80 now in the online auction. Everyone can bid until September 29, 2025.
Ocean 80 "Arrow of Ayr" is a seaworthy schooner with comfortable living space and functional equipment.
The Ocean 80 "Arrow of Ayr" is a 24.21-meter long sailing schooner, built in 1995 by the renowned Aquastar shipyard in Guernsey. The design is by the well-known yacht designer Doug Peterson, celebrated for his seaworthy and performance-oriented designs. This two-masted ship combines classic lines with a functional layout, making it suitable for long ocean voyages, charters, or comfortable living aboard.
With a width of 6.12 meters and a draft of 2.49 meters, the Ocean 80 offers a stable and spacious platform for both sailing and living aboard. The hull is made of polyester (fiberglass), contributing to relatively low maintenance and a long lifespan. It has a V-shaped bottom, which ensures good seaworthiness, especially in rough conditions.
Layout and accommodation
The "Arrow of Ayr" has a spacious accommodation layout with a total of 13 sleeping places, divided over 6 to 7 cabins. There are four guest cabins, each with its own en-suite bathroom with electric Lavacs toilet (2023) and shower. Additionally, there are three crew cabins, making the schooner suitable for professional use, such as manned charters.
The living spaces are equipped with air conditioning, providing comfort in warmer climates. The galley includes a refrigerator, freezer, oven, microwave, and stove, allowing for full meal preparation. Hot water is supplied via an integrated system. The yacht is also equipped with a water maker.
The salon offers ample seating, suitable for relaxation or communal meals. Thanks to Starlink internet, there is a stable connection, even at sea, enhancing comfort and functionality on board.
Engine and technical equipment
Power is provided by a Ford Mermaid Manta diesel engine with 170 hp. The engine has an electric start and approximately 50 operating hours since the last overhaul or replacement. The cruising speed is about 11 km/h, with a top speed of around 16 km/h. The fuel tank has a capacity of 2,300 liters, giving the yacht a significant range.
For power supply, the "Arrow of Ayr" is equipped with a 21 kW Phasor generator, six batteries, a battery charger, alternator, inverter, and shore power connection. The electrical system operates on 110V, 220V, and 24V, providing flexibility for various devices and systems. The valves were replaced in 2023, ensuring reliable through fittings.
Rigging and sail plan
The schooner has two aluminum masts and a sail plan of four sails: mainsail, staysail, genoa, and an additional headsail. The sails are from Doyle, dating from 2023. The headsail has a roller system for easier reefing and hoisting. The total sail area is approximately 250 m², providing good performance even in lighter winds.
Steering is done via a wheel system with cable and quadrant, with the steering position outside on the aft deck. The rudder is single. The ship has several electric winches, although two switches need replacement. The 70 kg Mantus anchor is also CQR and electrically operated, with two anchors on chain. The anchor winch switch and anchor locker seal both need to be replaced.
Navigation and safety
Navigation equipment includes an autopilot, AIS, GPS, chart plotter, depth sounder, and compass, enabling safe and efficient navigation, even in open water.
For safety, the "Arrow of Ayr" has a liferaft, lifebuoy, electric bilge pump, and self-draining cockpit. Additional bilge pumps are recommended for increased safety. The yacht is suitable for professional or charter use under the British flag.
Deck equipment and dinghy
The deck is equipped with a bimini and sprayhood for protection against sun and rain. Outside, there are comfortable seat cushions, a cockpit table, bow and stern seats, fenders and lines, a swim ladder, and a swim platform. The railing enhances safety on deck.
Highfield CL340 dinghy, equipped with a 30hp Tohatsu engine from 2024. Ideal for easily reaching the shore when at anchor or for short coastal trips.
Maintenance and condition
The "Arrow of Ayr" was last taken out of the water in 2023 for maintenance, including antifouling treatment. Known points of attention include electrical upgrades, replacement of a hatch in a guest cabin, paint and varnish work on the transom, scratches on the starboard side, and replacement of the headsail. Some electrical components need attention.
No signs of osmosis have been detected. The yacht is registered under the British flag with registration number 189938. VAT is unpaid, which may be relevant for import or sale within the EU.
Usage and sailing area
The current owner has used the yacht for recreational sailing at sea. The sailing performance is rated positively, especially during Caribbean trips, such as around Antigua. The ship is designed for ocean crossings, with comfort and autonomy for longer stays on board.
Conclusion
The Ocean 80 "Arrow of Ayr" is a spacious and functional sailing schooner with a classic appearance and a practical layout. With its combination of comfortable living spaces, extensive technical equipment, and seaworthy characteristics, this yacht is well-suited for long voyages, charters, or as a houseboat. Although there are some technical and cosmetic points to address, it offers a solid foundation for further customization or professional use. The British registration makes it attractive for commercial operation.
