Description
"The Tartan 3500 is a perfect example of what's right with the sailing industry. Handsome, well designed and soundly engineered, the 3500 is a sleek performance-cruiser that during the course of a long production run has also weathered the turbulent economic seas of the past few years." ~ John Kretschmer for Sailing Magazine
Windsong is a nice example of this very popular model and having a brand new Beta 30HP diesel engine with 0 hours on it, this should move her to the front of the market! Having spent her life in Maine waters with a single owner, Windsong sees 4-5 months a year of in water time while enjoying long off seasons being maintained by Maine artisan boat yards. Well-equipped and ready to cruise, Windsong is ready for her next adventures.
Located at Handy Boats in dry storage for the winter season, Windsong is available for showings by appointment.
A Personal View of WINDSONG
It was love at first sight in the fall of ‘92 when we met hull #16 of Tartan’s new 3500 series.
After outfitting over the winter, she was launched among the Maine islands of Casco Bay and
began her career as a family-owned cottage-on-the-sea.
We raced, most locally but some blue water too. I had sailed out of Newport and outfitted
Windsong for racing. Every summer, we would also cruise. Sometimes south of Cape Cod,
sometimes to Nova Scotia; usually Down East to the best cruising grounds in North
America—Penobscot Bay and beyond, where the lay of the land and a prevailing sou’westerly
means a beam reach regardless of sailing east or west.
Windsong finds her groove in 12-14 knots of wind but will move in 5-8 knots and not be
bothered by gusts at 20-25k if you have the right sail plan. I swapped out the beavertail keel for
a deeper keel and added rigging controls so she points well. She can fly a spinnaker or gently
rock downwind on a 150 genoa and a telescoping whisker pole. But there’s nothing more
relaxing than anchoring in some quiet cove; watching a golden sunset and listening to the sound
of a loon.
We’ve owned Windsong the entire time. Racing in the early years was exciting and an
organizational but satisfying challenge. Boat speed of 6-8 knots VMG in all kinds of seas; and a
steady helm. Layout is perfect for one or two couples. Plenty of storage and fresh water. Aft
facing nav station make communication with the helm easy.
Sailing with the kids, and now grandkids, has been a joy…whether they’re situated on the
mahogany bow pulpit seat or playing games down below at anchor. In recent seasons, we are
more into day sailing with friends and island hopping on our cruises.
Windsong has largely been cared for at two well-known coastal Maine boatyards: first, at
Robinhood Marine near Bath; then, at Handy Boat Service in Falmouth for the past few
seasons. In addition to annual maintenance, I’ve twice had the boat trainers go stem to stern,
looking for maintenance and upgrade items—electronics, electrical panel, plumbing, engine,
steering, drive shaft and Awlgrip.
Now, she’s looking for a new skipper that will care for her as much as we have.
— Reflections of the Owner
Tartan 3500
Comfortable Cruising
"You can't help but smile to yourself, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin as your family settles in for a summertime cruise in your 3500. The warmth increases with thoughts of your destination and the endless days of sailing ahead.
A well-mannered, firm able sailing vessel, the Tartan 3500 delivers the performance of a championship thoroughbred. Her moderate beam and powerful ends, paired with her... keel provide excellent stability and sail carrying ability. The long waterline and strong rig offer fast passages and a competitive edge, while the contoured cockpit seats, wide coamings and pedestal steering ensure a skipper's comfort both at sea and dockside." ~ Tartan 3500 Brochure
Hull
"The forethought and craftsmanship that are hallmarks of every Tartan Yacht are evident in the quality construction of the 3500. Her frame is engineered and constructed to minimize weight and increase interior volume without sacrificing its integrity. The hull is a handcrafted Baltek balsa-cored sandwich structure with a vinylester barrier coat between NPG/ISO gelcoat and the hand laid laminate. A cored deck and a bond-in-place structure produce a strength to weight ratio that uniquely makes her high performance, medium displacement (11,400 lbs) cruiser racer." ~ Tartan 3500 Brochure
