What we like most about this boat. Scout is a rock-solid, well-built boat that will take you anywhere you want to go. We have trusted her completely to keep our family safe at sea. Privileges were semi-custom and are renowned for their robustness of build. Compare the size and quality of the rigging, boom, mast, and interior woodwork used on Scout to a typical production boat and you’ll see why they inspire confidence. When you’re in the middle of an ocean with your family onboard, the peace of mind gained from being in such a strong boat is priceless.

The decks are high enough that she is a dry boat even in large seas. She is fast and stable in trade wind conditions. In lighter winds she is not breaking any speed records, but the spinnakers and Code D nylon sail keep her moving at a good pace. Every cruising boat is a compromise and this one provides a good balance of safety, comfort, and voyaging capability. Scout is a go-anywhere boat that sails surprisingly well upwind for a catamaran, a function of her deeper keels.

The spaciousness has been perfect for our liveaboard family and even supported two families for over two months on an expedition from Australia to Thailand. Each of our two children has the privacy of their own en suite cabin. There is an extra cabin for guests and another used for storage. There is plenty of table and floor space for entertaining, school, playing, and exercise, which makes a difference on passages and on days when you’re stuck on the boat. Remote work is supported.

There is tons of storage on this boat, including under all the settees of the main saloon. More importantly for a catamaran, the weight of extra gear and other heavy items does not slow this boat as much as it would many lighter catamarans. There is also lots of headroom — no problem walking around even at 6’4″ tall.

We love the huge kitchen. It makes all the difference and the boat feels like home rather than camping and making do in a cramped space. Having entertained and lived aboard for many years, we really appreciate the galley down. The mess of cooking is contained out of sight and the galley does not take up valuable saloon space. The extra room and counter space have allowed us to make great meals on board and to teach our kids to cook.

Accommodations and layout. Sleeps up to ten comfortably. There are five separate cabins, four with an en suite. Forward cabins have separate shower stalls. The center nacelle also contains a cabin with a queen-sized bed, although this was typically used by the crew and is not a full-height cabin. Cabins are equipped with fans.

Three bathrooms have electric flush heads and are plumbed for a choice of fresh or salt water. The spare bathroom contains a compostable toilet for enhanced low-impact living.

The central saloon is large and open with a table and built-in storage.

The starboard side of the salon has a dedicated navigation station with a large washing machine. The extensive solar array produces plenty of power to keep up with laundry.

The cockpit is large with two tables and multiple seating options. Custom enclosures keep the rain out and can provide additional shade at anchor.

The galley features loads of counter space and a deep double sink as well as a separate UV water filter faucet. There is a large, built-in front-opening refrigerator and a separate top-opening freezer with an eutectic holding plate. The freezer is water-cooled and plumbed into the port water tank for efficiency and to prevent marine growth issues associated with raw water use.

Cooking is easy on a four-burner gas stove with oven and broiler, big enough to roast a small turkey. LPG is supplied from a vented propane locker and the galley has a mounted solenoid and gas detection unit that allow remote turning of the gas on and off.

Engine room access is from the outside in the cockpit, keeping engine noise and smells separate from the living space.

Hull and topsides. The cockpit is fully covered with a custom hardtop that is vastly larger than the original canvas dodger. It is fiberglass supported by sturdy aluminum supports with stainless steel handrails. The hardtop holds some solar panels and allows easy access when stowing the mainsail.

Heavy-duty davits support the dinghy and outboard while at sea, high enough to be clear of the waves. The davits also support a solar array, keeping the dinghy out of the sun and providing unobstructed solar generation.

Wide side decks with multiple handhold options allow for safe movement around the boat while at sea.

All hatches were replaced with low-profile versions.

The topsides were refinished and the bottom treated with Coppercoat, which was re-activated in 2025. All below-water through-hulls and sea cocks were replaced with composite, non-corrosive fittings, including high-strength collars.

Both rudders were rebuilt with solid stainless steel rudder stock in 2020 and are filled with a lightweight epoxy filler to prevent water intrusion.

Standing rigging was replaced in 2020.

Propulsion. Twin inboard engines provide reliable power with shaft drive and fixed three-bladed props and dripless shaft seals. New transmissions were installed recently.

The main deck has hatches for engine room access, so there is no need to tear apart the boat to reach the engines.

Electrical systems. The solar array and battery bank provide ample power for living off grid. A generator provides AC power when needed and the boat is wired for both 230 VAC and 120 VAC, with outlets supplied from shore power, the generator, or the inverter.

Simply put, the electrical system is more than sufficient to support a family of four full time off grid. We haven’t plugged the boat into shore power from Panama to Florida and almost never needed to run the generator to fill the batteries. The system also powers our watermaker.

All circuits are individually fused and switched through a main panel. Battery and house wiring were updated recently and all light fixtures have been converted to LED. LED strip lighting was added in the cockpit and galley, and 12V fans are installed in all cabins.

Water and plumbing. There are four heads, with two forward heads having separate shower stalls. The aft heads have pull-out faucets if a shower is desired. Each head drains to a shower pan with a manually activated pump-out. There is also a separate shower room in the starboard hull that has been re-purposed into a wet/scuba locker. The exterior port transom features a handheld shower.

The heads can be supplied by either seawater or fresh water via two-way selectors. A holding tank is connected to the port forward toilet via a selection valve and can be emptied via a deck fitting or by gravity drain to a submerged through-hull.

Hot water is created by running the port engine or via a 230 VAC heating element, and a hot water tank stores hot water. Note: the electrical heating element is currently burned out, but a spare is aboard if you wish to restore that functionality; we typically get our hot water from the engine.

The fresh water system is supplied by a high-capacity pump and is pre-filtered before distribution to faucets. A spare house water pump is onboard. All water and diesel tanks have senders that connect to a navigation-station-mounted tank level indicator so you immediately know the amount of fuel and water in each tank.

The watermaker runs off 120 VAC supplied by the inverter, so there is no need to run the generator to make water; it typically produces above its rated output. Emergency water jugs are carried for contingency use.

The boat is equipped with extensive safety gear and multiple bilge pumps. In addition, many spares and tools are onboard to support extended cruising and systems maintenance.
