ENGINE AND BOW THRUSTER
Engine/Prop: Her Westerbeke 35B diesel, coupled with her FeatherStream 4 blade feathering prop, keeps her moving briskly when sails are not being used and when motor sailing.
Fuel: Her 35-gallon diesel fuel tank gives the boat great range under power alone. The fuel system includes two separate Racor fuel filters (that can be easily switched between) and a Westerbeke 0.5 Micron primary filter.
Bow Thruster: Her bow thruster, with binnacle mounted joystick, makes her easily maneuverable when docking.
NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT
Overview:
Her navigation equipment is some of the best available, providing the helmsman with high quality, total-environment information, and precise, redundant steering control. There are two independent electronic navigation systems on board: a Furuno TZT system and a Garmin GPS Map 225 plotter. These electronic navigation systems interface with the Robertson Autopilot and high-speed fluxgate compass.
The Furuno electronic navigator utilizes a variety of sensors with two independent GPS receivers and antennas, a transducer for water depth, temperature and boat speed through the water, a masthead sensor for wind speed and direction, a sonar transducer that provides graphic display of the water column and sea bottom contours, and an electronic fluxgate compass, 36-mile radar, AIS Class B transceiver, and satellite weather module that is used as the primary navigation system.
The Garmin navigator utilizes its own GPS antenna and a shore linked differential antenna for increased accuracy. A Garmin GPSMAP 225D system is used as a secondary electronic navigation system.
Additional navigation support provided by two independent magnetic compasses.
Primary Navigation System: Her primary navigation system is a complete Furuno TZT package, with 14-inch touch display at the helm. The display shows information from the system’s numerous sensors and receives input from the helmsman regarding desired course and heading. If selected as the primary navigator, the display can be used with the autopilot to steer the boat by compass heading, relative wind, waypoint, or course. The display shows boat position, waypoints, course, radar and sonar information as well as all other navigations data such as speed, depth, Time to Next Way Point etc.
A convenient over-the-companionway cluster of two FI-501 wind angle and speed displays (one currently set to true wind the other currently set to apparent wind), and two FI-504 Multi-displays for depth, boat speed, distance logging, etc.(one currently set for depth and the other currently set for boat speed), makes reading key navigation data easy from anyplace in the cockpit and when sheltered under the dodger.
The Furuno system includes:
- Electronic charts for US waters,
- A dedicated GPS sensor and antenna for navigation,
- Masthead mounted wind direction and wind speed sensors,
- A through hull tri-ducer for depth, speed, and water temperature.
- A through hull transducer (sonar) that provides graphic display of water column (including fish) and sea-bottom contours,
- A dedicated satellite weather radio connects with Sirius weather satellites to provide graphic displays of US and international weather radar, NOAA Buoy data and related weather data (by subscription),
- The 36- mile radar system is equipped with MARPA.
- The radar dome is on a Scanstrut LMM-2 self-levelling, gimbled swing arm mounted on the mast. The swing arm keeps the radar dome level when boat is heeled. The radar unit provides excellent situational awareness of ships, rain, and coastal features.
- The system has a Class B AIS transponder with its own dedicated GPS sensor and antenna. The transponder shows the name, call sign, heading, speed, distance, and other data as transmitted by other AIS equipped boats in the area. The AIS transponder will also broadcast identifying and navigational information about Compass Rose to other AIS equipped ships in the area.
Secondary Navigation System: Her secondary navigation system is a Garmin GPS MAP 225 plotter. This unit is located at the navigation station inside the boat. It shows the boat’s position, heading, speed, charts, navigation objects and other data. If a destination has been entered, time to next way point and other navigation data is available. It has its own, independent GPS receiver with its own dedicated GPS antenna and separate Differential GPS antenna. The plotter is tied into the boat’s autopilot system and, if selected as the primary navigator, can steer the boat by compass heading, way point or course.
Compass Navigation: There are three compasses on board.
- A high-speed flux-gate compass that is used to provide compass heading information electronically to autopilot and navigation instruments.
- An illuminated, Ritchie five-inch Globemaster compass at the helm
- An illuminated, Ritchie B-80 Voyager compass mounted in the saloon
AUTOPILOT
Grace has a powerful and flexible Robertson AP300X autopilot system. The system interfaces with the primary and secondary electronic navigation systems and provides precise, redundant steering control. The autopilot system consists of:
- An RFC-35 electronic fluxgate compass. The compass provides magnetic heading information, in an electronic form, so that it can be used by the JX300 and the Furuno and Garmin navigators.
- A JX300 autopilot junction box with a “learning” computer. The JX300 links the fluxgate compass to the Furuno and Garmin navigators.
- An RF300 rudder feedback unit, that provides rudder angle information to the autopilot computer.
- An RF-300 reversible hydraulic pump with linear ram, which is attached directly to the rudder post. This allows the boat to be steered by autopilot alone in the advent of a damaged binnacle or a steering cable failure.
- Two fixed AP300CX autopilot control heads for steering, allowing the boat to be steered from the helm or the below deck navigation station.
- A portable AP300PX steering control head, with a 30-foot cable, allows the boat to be steered from almost anywhere above or below deck.

There is a red, individually adjustable night light mounted just above the cabin sole.
Forward Cabin – Engineering Spaces
Under the v-berth cushion there are removeable panels providing convenient access to several large compartments. These compartments consist of spaces for additional storage, the bow thruster, the dedicated bow thruster-windlass battery, and the black water tank. Under the v-berth seat there is a compartment that has additional storage and that contains the Jabsco Model 52700 wash-down pump and its through hull valve. The pump has an on-deck quick connect fitting. It is rated output at 80 PSI and 7.0 GPM. On-OFF switch for the washdown pump is conveniently located on the aft facing navigation station panel.
Head- Living Space The head is located to port. Ventilation and illumination are provided by a screened opening port, fresh air from the dorade and an LED dome light. It has laminate bulkheads with teak trim. A huge two-door multi-shelf cabinet is located outboard of a Jabsco Twist n’ Lock manual marine toilet. Main Cabin – Engineering Space
The keel stepped mast stands midships at the main cabin’s forward bulkhead. All mast wiring is run in the mast. The in-mast wiring terminates at the base of the mast with quick connect fittings. This makes hauling the mast in the fall, and stepping it in the spring, (which we do every year) a much easier task, not requiring disconnecting and reconnecting 20 or more individual wires. There are five quick connect fittings. One connector each for: the masthead FI-5001 Wind Vane, the VHF/AIS/FM antenna, the mast mounted radar, the mast mounted TV antenna and one for other mast mounted items such as the Tri-Color Strobe, Windex light, anchor light, running light, steaming light, spreader/deck lights and fog horn/hailer.
