Description

DANZA is a sister-ship to the original British Steel which Chay Blyth made famous when he sailed her around the world against the wind south of all the major southern capes in 1970. DANZA was built in Cape Town, South Africa by Saum Globe and launched in 1985. After her launching she was sailed to America and sold and was then used as a school ship based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her trips included a counterclockwise circumnavigation of South America, a trip up the coast of Labrador, and a trip to Portugal and back as well as innumerable voyages within the Caribbean. She was lead ship in the New York City Tall Ships Parade in 1992 commemorating the first voyage of Christopher Columbus.
The previous owner purchased DANZA in March of 1999 and sailed her to Maine where she underwent a total refit in the owners boatyard, known then as David Nutt Boatbuilder, Inc.
The interior was essentially gutted with the removal of the engine and shaft, galley, heads, and aluminum toe rail removed. Every through hull was removed and welded over with new through fittings in 316L stainless to suit lay-out changes.

The current owner had Lyman-Morse in Camden, Maine install a bow thruster, redesign the teak interior with new doors, head floor grates and EDSON cockpit table. US Spars replaced with new 2023 main mast and boom. DANZA was then sailed to Florida for a near complete refit of every major system on board inclusive of main mast and boom.

With the refit completed the owner and family sailed around the world via the bottom of South Africa.

RIGGING and SAILS

Danza is ketch rigged with a double headsail sail plan. The roller furling systems are the well proven HARKEN 2019 on both the jib and the staysail 2019. The main IS fully battened and the main runs on the ANTAL track and car system. The main has 3 reef points and lazy jacks; the mizzen has 2 reef points and drops into a ‘Stackpack’. Two asymmetrical spinnakers 2024 are used for off wind sailing. They are housed in an ATN sock. For additional sail area when reaching there is a mizzen staysail with an ATN sock 2024. There is a simple removable ‘bowsprit’ to which attaches the tack of the asymmetrical and the pole guys which making all of these lines much easier to handle and clears them from the pulpit. There are two spinnaker poles.
The ketch rig is an outstanding choice for cruising on boats longer than 15m/50ft. None of the sails are particularly big or difficult to handle. The double headsail rig with its jib and staysail are an important part of the equation because you can furl the jib and still have the staysail in action.
The sails were designed and purchased in 2024 including a Jib, Staysail,Main, Mizzen Asymetrical Spinnacker and Mizzen Stay Sail, ATN Gale sail (bright orange). A new sailcover for the main and a new stackpack is on the mizzen 2024.
The 2 dodgers and other canvas work including the cockpit enclosure were replaced in the fall of 2015. An Awning for the cockpit was replaced in 2024.

WINCHES

A LEWMAR electric winch installed in the cockpit 2019 so the the main, mizzen,  starboard spinnaker halyards are all run aft to aiding in hoisting sails or person.

ENGINE and DRIVETRAIN

The original engine was replaced with a new YANMAR 4JH3-TBE 125hp turbo diesel with a KMH4A transmission. The shaft system is a 1.5 inch AQUAMET 22 stainless steel shaft coupled to the transmission with an R&D Flexible Shaft Coupling and new cutlass bearings. The propeller is an GORI automatic variable pitch propeller. The engine drives a 90 amp 24 volt BALMAR alternator with a Balmar 3 step regulator. A VICTRON 24v-12v charger charges the 12v starting battery and the 12v ships battery independently of each other, again regulated by a Balmar 3 step regulator.

STEERING and AUTOPILOT

The original steering system was replaced during a refit with a new WHITLOCK system. (WHITLOCK is now owned by LEWMAR.) One of the big features of the Whitlock system is the LEWMAR MAMBA 1/2hp (Motor replaced after 30 years 2025) autopilot drive motor which interfaces with the drive gearbox via a splined shaft. The drive motor is incredibly efficient and powerful and may well be the best drive system available. The brains of the autopilot are the B&G H5000 2025 control box, and the  PRECISION 9 Compass. The system has worked flawlessly and never have we had to take over due to rough conditions. In addition a SCANMAR International Wind-vane was installled by Lyman-Morse in 2020.

LAYOUT

DANZA has a forepeak cabin with V- berths and extensive storage. Next aft is the toilet

compartment with shower, next aft is a 4 berth cabin with upper and lower berth on both sides. The main salon has settee/berths on both sides with a centerline table and pilot berths outboard to port and starboard at the forward wend of the cabin. Aft is the galley on the portside with the sink amidships. The navigation station is on the starboard side. The aft cabin has berths to port and starboard, there is a toilet compartment with shower to starboard. Access to the engine is under the sink counter with multiple access ports. The

cockpit is aft with wheel steering.

GALLEY

The refrigerator is approximately 10 cubic feet/300 liters and the freezer is 4 cu feet/120 liters and holds up to 160lbs/75kg of frozen meat and vegetables. The system is kept cold with the VITRIFRIGO air cooled refrigeration system 2020.
The propane stove is the BROADWATER SCHOONER with a 4 burner top, broiler and thermostatic oven. The stove has been 100% reconditioned  at the factory in Australia. It is probably the best marine stove available. There is a solenoid shut off switch in the galley and independent propane alarms in both the propane locker and the main bilge area below the stove.
The sink is amidships with hot/cold pressure water and foot pump cold water.
The galley is comfortable, easy to cook in and keep clean and works well.

ELECTRICAL

The electrical system was replaced in its entirety including all of the wiring. She is set up with a 12v system to handle the many items such as propane solenoids, stereo systems, and Icom’s vhf and ssb radios and some other electronics that are not readily available in 24v. The rest of the DC systems are 24v. This includes lighting, autopilot, many of the electronics, and all of the pumping systems. The AC system is based on 110v 60Hz. It revolves around the MAGNUM Charger/Inverter 2024 that draws its power from the 24v battery bank and the NORTHERN LIGHTS 9Kw generator 2019. The BLUE WATER SYSTEMS water maker, the toasteroven and other small appliances all run on 110v. A 24v 90 amp BALMAR alternator 2024 is belted off the YANMAR and is regulated with BALMAR’s BRS-ll-24 regulator. There is also 24-12 VICTRON charger 2024 to charge the 12v battery bank and the engine start battery, regulated by a BALMAR 3 step regulator. The alternator on the generator charges the genset start battery. There is a 24v wind generator 2024 producing 24v.
All electrical systems can be charged or operated using the generator as an electrical supply source in conjunction with the MAGNUM inverter 2024. Likewise, in the event of a generator failure, all electrical systems can be can be charged or operated using the alternators run off the YANMAR engine in conjunction with the MAGNUM inverter.
The 110v 60Hz shore power charges the 24v bank through the MAGNUM Inverter/Charger. A VICTRON charger that operates between 90 and 270vac, 50/60HZ charges the batteries while dockside in marinas that provide 220-240 50HZ power. It would also work with 110v 60Hz power as a backup.
Interior lighting uses energy efficient 24v LED bulbs 2019.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Current DANZA owners having circumnavigation  comments;

During our extensive refits we have modernized DANZA’s systems but still kept them accessible and easy to maintain. Over our roughly 30,000 miles of sailing she has proven herself a true ocean going yacht and has been a pleasure to sail in all types of weather. There is little we would have changed during our circumnavigation. DANZA has been maintained at the highest level. Her ketch rig makes her easy to sail shorthanded and she is ready to go around the world again.  With her beautiful lines, yet robust hull and rig, she catches the eye wherever she goes. It has been an honor to own and captain this vessel.

DANZA'S PREVIOUS OWNERS COMMENTS;

Danza has met our expectations with 45,000 miles of sailing over our 5 years of ownership. We sailed in all kinds of weather and anchored in all kinds of conditions. She was "Our home where we have raised our 4 children". She has been very comfortable for us and there is little we would have done to change our lives during our circumnavigation. Danza truly is a voyaging yacht.
