Description
1978 Hans Christian 38T
Few boats command the respect and admiration that a Hans Christian does at anchor or under sail. The 38T is a proven passagemaker, built with heavy fiberglass layup, a full keel, and a timeless design that stands out in any harbor.
This particular 38T has been with the same owner for almost 40 years and has seen major upgrades throughout that time. Over three summers, the decks were taken down and fully rebuilt using fiberglass and closed-cell foam. The running rigging was updated to a reliable Seldén single-line system, bringing all sail controls back to the cockpit for easier handling, along with Lazy Jacks on the main for quick sail drops. She’s powered by a 60 hp Yanmar diesel (installed in 1999) with just over 1,200 hours.
Down below, you’ll find the rich teak interior and craftsmanship these boats are known for, with a traditional layout that’s as practical as it is charming. Thoughtful maintenance and upgrades, from chain plates to the solar panel setup. If you’re looking for a capable, well-cared-for cruising boat with character and proven Bluewater ability, this Hans Christian 38T is more than ready for her next chapter.

Additional Information
Deck Rebuild: Starting around 2001, the decks were stripped down and rebuilt over three summers. The original teak deck overlays were removed, followed by all the dry rot wood. A solid fiberglass base was laid down then filled with closed-cell foam for strength and insulation. The decks are rock solid and dry, a rare find on classic cruisers.
Rigging: The Running rigging has been well maintained and a Seldén single-line system was added brings all sail controls back to the cockpit for easy handling. There are three reefs on the main, with reef points clearly marked and easy to manage. The mainsail features Lazy Jacks, making raising and lowering the sail quick and safe. The genoa is older but rarely used offshore, and an additional smaller genoa is stored onboard, rigged for roller furling.
Solar Panels: Four solar panels are installed to maintain battery charge while cruising offshore. There’s also a smaller panel for winter use. The panels sit on sturdy mounts and are perfect for extended trips.
Autopilot & Windvane: The boat is equipped with an Monitor windvane self-steering system, perfect for long passages with minimal power draw.
Chain Plates & Structural: Stainless steel has been added to the chain plates, ensuring strength and long-term durability.
Tankage: Two propane tanks onboard, including a trapezoidal backup tank, provide ample fuel for cooking and heating. Fresh water capacity is about 100 gallons, with an onboard macerator holding tank system installed.
Interior & Storage: The cabin was refinished a few years ago, the galley stove was replaced and is fully functional. The original refrigerator remains operational, and all systems have been maintained with attention to detail.
Canvas & Enclosures: Custom 9 piece full boat cover with canvas enclosures cover the cockpit, crafted by a longtime local canvas maker who maintains the boat’s covers.
General Maintenance: The owner has kept the boat in excellent condition, with regular checks on wiring, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
