Description
SCOUT (name reserved) is a very rare classic yacht built in fiberglass by Hodgdon Brothers in Boothbay Harbor Maine. She was designed by the venerable firm of John G. Alden Naval Architects. She is one of only six in the world, and the only one to feature a taller rig, yet is still ICW friendly with a bridge clearance of 63 1/2’. This coupled with her full-keel shoal draft (only 5’5”) allows her to go essentially anywhere. She is a stout off-shore cruiser with that regularly makes the trip from New York to Florida and back. Yet she is nimble enough to transit shallow waters for gunkholing small harbors and creeks. Her dual Hood Stowaway masts (replaced in 1996) and new Selden roller furling makes sail handling a breeze by one or two people.
She has been constantly improved over the past decade with recent upgrades including a 9KW Northern Lights Generator, Victron 3000W inverter / charger with 900W Solara solar panels, Vetus 24Volt thruster, Maxwell 3500 windlass with chain counter and cockpit controls, 3 Dometic Air Conditioning units, Ray Axion chartplotter with radar overlay, Ray Marine sailing instruments, AIS, autopilot, main mast standing rigging, running rigging, custom yacht boarding stairs, and cockpit enclosure. Recent safety equipment include off-shore storm windows, Viking 6 person off-shore liferaft, Man Overboard system, two EPIRBs, jacklines, and tethers.
ON DECK
SCOUT features a commanding center cockpit with great visibility out of 4 fixed and 1 opening port, loads of seating and storage, and a teak helms chair. The cockpit is fully enclosable for all weather sailing with Sunbrella and Eisen glass curtains. This allows the cockpit to become additional living space and an extension of the interior. She has two removable teak inserts / doorways for access to the port and starboard decks. Her custom hardtop (removable if needed) has six “walk-on” solar panels mounted to the top. The helm station features a 48” Edson wheel and access to all navigation controls, trumpet horn- as well as engine, bow thruster, and windlass. The cockpit floor features two bronze deck prisms that bring ample light into the engine room below Anchoring Scout is a cinch from the cockpit with the helm mounted windlass control with a digital display of the chain counter. All electronics and stereo controls are mounted on the dashboard with repeaters for the sailing instruments, stereo and VHF mounted in the salon. Other helm features include a Racor dislay to indicate if water is present in the fuel filters, engine alarms and automatic fire suppression system for the engine room.
Forward of the cockpit and above the main salon is a large custom sun pad that can easily accommodate six guests for relaxing. The custom flush Solimar hatch for the salon can still be opened with the sun pad in place as the sun pad features a cut-out. Forward of the salon, on deck, is a spacious forward deck featuring two classic teak hatches, multiple dorades, and stero speakers. The foredeck has two sets of custom removable YRM dinghy chocks that carry two tenders- a Cape Dory 10’ sailing dinghy and 12’ Caribe inflatable with 25 HP Yamaha engine.
Forward of the tender storage is a Maxwell 3500 anchor windlass with foot controls and salt water washdown. The main anchor is an 80 pound Rocna anchor with 300’ 3/8 HT chain. The secondary anchor is 60 pound CQR anchor with 50’ of 3/8” chain and 250 of 1” nylon rode.
Returning aft on deck, Scout features wide side decks, all new lifelines, and four boarding gates. She features a custom teak “ship accommodation ladder” that makes getting people, children, and pets aboard very easy and convenient. When docking or sailing off shore, the stairs can be raised and folded flat against the lifelines.
Aft of the cockpit is a large aft deck with custom teak and stainless steel curved bench, a large lazarette for line and fender storage, Bose stereo speakers, and a separate locker for two propane tanks. The aft deck also houses a BBQ, GPS and Starlink antennas, Man Over Board System, dual throwable life rings, and a 6 person life raft that is set in a cradle. There is also deck access to the rudder post to connect the emergency tiller.
SALON
Down only four stairs from the cockpit is the enormous, raised salon with 8 large fixed ports, one opening port, and an overhead hatch. The light and airiness of Scout’s salon cannot be overstated. This part of the boat has 270 degree commanding views outside, and one can see out while seated instead of being below in a “cave-like” environment that is found on most sailboats. Her “L-shaped” banquette and folding teak, along with her two director chairs allows for a seated dinner for up to 8 people. The banquette sette also slides out for two people to sleep if needed- making the total bunk count for this boat suitable for up to 9 people. This area of the boat also features a large chart table, tons of storage, cabinets, drawers, air-conditioning controls and a bookshelf. The salon has four wall sconces, and LED overhead lights. This cabin (and the entire boat) has new overhead wainscoting with teak trim ceilings; as well as teak and holly floors. Under the floors of the salon are the vessels tanks, electric and emergency bilge pumps, and 12v refrigerator and freezer compressors.
GALLEY
Forward of the salon, and down two steps is the large galley. She features a GE stainless steel dishwasher, 3 burner propane stove with oven, and a large restaurant style refrigerator and freezer. The galley features two opening portholes, opening overhead hatch, dorade vent, tons of storage and great overhead lighting.
GUEST HEAD
Opposite the galley is a guest head, with new Tecna freshwater electic toilet, shower and abundant storage. This head has an opening porthole, dorade vent, 110V outlet, and automatic shower sump pump. It also has a second doorway for access to the guest cabin.
GUEST CABIN 1
Also opposite the galley, and just forward of the guest head is large guest cabin with an upper and lower berth. This cabin features a very deep hanging locker, built in bureau, 2 mirrors, a custom built in bureau, two fans, 3 wall sconces, 110V and 12V outlets and overhead hatch.
GUEST CABIN 2
Continuing forward is large guest cabin that features a large double berth to port with a new memory foam mattress. This cabin has its own sink and an abundance of storage in lockers, shelves, and drawers. This cabin features 3 wall sconces, mirror, dorade vent, fan, and110V and 12V outlets. Under the bed is access to the bow thruster and storage areas. Forward of this cabin is a bulkhead with access to the two compartment chain locker.
AFT PASSAGEWAY
Returning aft in the cabin, and down a step from the salon is the passageway to the Owner’s Cabin. The passageway features a captain’s berth on the starboard side with privacy curtains and storage below the berth. This bunk has its own light, 110V and 12 V outlet, and a fan. Opposite of the captain’s berth is the electrical panels and access to the engine room.
OWNER'S STATEROOM
This is a very large, open and airy owner’s stateroom. The large double berth is to port and features a new memory foam mattress. Under the bed is storage for the fourteen ½” Lexan storm windows that are fitted for ocean crossings. This area also houses the extra dinghy chocks for bringing the inflatable aboard for off shore passages.
The owner’s stateroom features an abundance of storage with nine drawers, a large hanging locker, numerous cabinets, 110V and 12V outlets, fan, 3 wall sconces, overhead lighting, overhead hatch, and teak and holly floors.
OWNER'S HEAD
The owner’s stateroom has its own ensuite head on the port side of the cabin. The head feature a separate shower stall with custom seated bath tub, mirror, storage, medicine chest, overhead lighting and dorade vent.
ENGINE ROOM
SCOUT features a very large engine room that makes it easy to move around and maintain her equipment. The main engine is a very reliable Perkins 6.3544 135 HP diesel engine. This motor has the oil changed religiously every 300 hours and features a new high output 150Amp Balmar alternator, new starter, new water pump, and new exhaust elbow and muffler. The high speed fuel pump was just rebuilt.
The boat’s generator was recently replaced with a 9KW Northern Lights. Both the engine and generator are fed through a dual Racor filter with water alarm. There is also an easy-to-use, single-handle fuel valve to simultaneously change fuel tanks and fuel returns at the same time.
Her solar panels and inverter allow the owner to operate the vessel for days at a time without ever needing to run the generator. She has a new Victron 3000 inverter / charge with 6 Solara 150 Watt solar panels, each with its own Victron control head and Cerbo. This charges the house bank which consists of 5 new 4D batteries totalling 720 TKTK amp hours. The inverter / charger also feed two other Victron chargers for the 12V engine bank and the 24V bank for the bow thruster and windlass (see Victron schematic attached).
Also in the engine room is a 110 Volt 20 gallon Quik water heater, that is also heated by a main engine loop.
Scout is equipped with a Siren Marine Boat monitoring system that allows the owner to easily to monitor the boat from anywhere in the world from a phone app. The system shows battery voltage, boats precise location, and bilge levels.

Broker's Comments
SCOUT is owned by a lifelong friend - we met in Junior Sailing Class! We have bought and sold many boats together over the years. The owner of SCOUT is one of the most fastidious and thorough yacht owner's I have known in over 30 years in the business! The next owner of this outstanding Alden 58 will benefit from many, many upgrades over the last decade of ownership. She never sits and is always on the go with all systems functioning as they should. If something is not working properly, it is repaired or replaced immediately.
It is very rare to say that a 1971/55 year old boat is in excellent condition, but SCOUT will not disappoint. She is on the East Coast of Florida for the winter and coming north to New York in the spring - unless you buy her!
