Description

The Fishers Island 31, a 44’ enlarged version of Capt. Nat’s famous 26' ALERION, is one of the most revered of all Herreshoff designs. Whether racing or cruising their performance characteristics are legendary as being remarkably fast yet remaining perfectly balanced and well-mannered in every condition from the slightest zephyr to the freshest of breezes.

Launched in 1929, AZURA (HMCo. #1132) was the 6th of the Fishers Island 31 Class. Renamed PROCYON she received complete refastening, mast step reinforcement, cockpit well, and refinishing at Ballentine's Boat Shop in 1993.

Since then she has been maintained and tastefully updated by Ballantine’s at the highest imaginable standard. Paint and varnish are coated annually, her 40hp Yanmar diesel engine was installed in 2022, batteries and charging system in 2021, new sails in 2014, modern refrigeration in 2014, and a Garmin chart plotter, VHF radio, and depth sounder.

PROCYON’s structure is largely original, with beautifully sanded teak decks, topsides of double planked Douglas fir and cypress above the waterline, and single planked yellow pine below. Hull framing and centerline structure are white oak with yellow pine deadwood.

Her timeless and elegant interior is a warm combination of painted off-white paneling and satin varnished mahogany – with a layout modified by the Concordia Company in the 1940s to make her more comfortable for coastal cruising.

PROCYON's cabin arrangement features a large galley aft, Concordia style pipe berths and storage shelves in the main saloon, and large enclosed head amidships. The cabin house forward of the mast was lengthened to provide standing headroom in the v-berth; and large teak butterfly hatches add natural light and ventilation. A wood stove mounted forward in the main cabin insures a cozy and dry ambience during late season cruises.

On deck, PROCYON retains most of her original classic bronze hardware, yet running rigging has been tastefully modernized to facilitate shorthanded or solo sailing. She features an easily managed self-tacking club footed jib, mainsheet traveler with a cam cleat, and cockpit mounted bronze winches for the running backstays. Even with all control lines lead aft, the cockpit remains spacious and comfortable for a large crew or family and guests.

Today PROCYON stands out as an unmatched example of classic Herreshoff design and construction, thoughtfully updated, and impeccably maintained thanks to a long history of caring ownership. Whether you're looking for a competitive yacht for the classic race circuit or a comfortable family cruiser, PROCYON promises to impress and will no doubt prove her worth to the next generation of stewards.

PROCYON is currently at Ballentine's Boat Shop in Cataumet, MA, and available to be seen by appointment.
