Description

Dovekie, a Classic 42 Kadey Krogen trawler, is set up for self-sufficiency and extended living aboard; stabilizers plus bow and stern thrusters make it an easy boat for a couple to operate. Her generator, solar panels, large battery bank and water-maker let her go to remote anchorages. She spent many years in remote places throughout the Bahamas as well as circumnavigating the Caribbean; she is fully capable of returning to these places tomorrow. To facilitate her adventures, she has had numerous upgrades.  In 2007 her hull was strengthened and vinyl-estered by Osprey Marine Composites of Herrington Harbor North in Deale, MD. In 2004, Osprey Marine totally re-cored and Awl-gripped her top deck. That same year, Naiad stabilizers were added. During 2007, Dovekie’s decks were completely replaced with new teak (no screws!) and her hull was fully re-gelcoated. To maintain her hull in top condition, Dovekie has been stored “on the hard” during the summer from 2000 through 2017. She moved to NJ in 2018 and was stored “on the hard” for the winter and wintered in Myrtle Beach for 2019-2020, New Bern NC 2020-2021 where she had a bow thruster installed, Charleston SC 2021-2022, Portsmouth VA 2022-2023, Portsmouth NH 2023-2024 and “on the hard” in NJ 2024-2025.

Salon/Galley

Salon
Two teak doors off the covered aft deck lead into the spacious saloon. To starboard is a futon sofa with storage drawers (the futon folds flat to sleep 2) and coffee table. To port is a comfortable leather Stressless chair and footrest (new 2018), storage seat, and fold out teak table that stores four chairs. Three swing arm lamps and overhead lights provide extra light for reading. A 32” flat screen LG TV, omni-directional digital TV antenna-(new 2018), and Sony DVD player provide entertainment, as does the Fusion Stereo in the pilot-house (new 2019). Two opening windows with custom valances and mini blinds keep the interior bright and cool. Parquet floors are protected by an area rug. A bookcase/cabinet on the port side provides storage and access to the electrical panels. The back doors have a custom Mirage Screen installed (new 2020) and all windows are screened as well.

Galley
Adjacent to the saloon, the U-shaped galley-up is forward and to starboard. An opening port over the 3-burner Force 10 propane stove lets in light and air. Ventilation is further enhanced by a removable and reversible exhaust fan. The double sink is SS and deep. Lighting is improved with two halogen lights, one over the stove, the other over the sink. The main refrigeration is an 11.6 cubic foot Nova Kool refrigerator/freezer (new 2013), which runs off either DC or AC. (There is also an auxiliary refrigerator/freezer below in the guest stateroom.) The microwave is installed in a custom teak cabinet. A wine glass rack and spice rack add to the accessible storage. Even so, storage space in the drawers and cabinets is very ample. Drinking water is supplied by a Seagull Water Filter System (new 2019).

Pilothouse/ Upper Deck & Flybridge

Pilothouse
The pilothouse is three steps up from the saloon. If features an expansive helm area with large windows. The center window opens for ventilation. Dutch doors to port and starboard can be completely opened or half closed to secure the pilothouse while underway. The center window and both doors are fully screened. The roomy ultra suede covered berth converts to a double bed for guests desiring incredible views. The cabinet and drawer storage under the dash is impressive. A custom bookshelf on the starboard side houses not only books but also the SSB radio. The pilothouse equipment is listed in the corresponding section below.

Upper Deck and Flybridge
The flybridge is accessed from the aft deck via steps. A bimini (new 2021) keeps the sun off the upper helm and a waterproof flybridge cover (new 2018) provides protection when the helm is not in use. Four Solar panels are mounted on a custom SS rack forward of the flybridge, nested between the name boards. The four panels are hinged, making the pilothouse roof easily accessible for maintenance. On either side of the flybridge, a large fiberglass deck box has been mounted on teak supports to provide additional storage. The mast and boom are equipped with two electric winches for ease of hauling and launching for a dinghy. When on the top deck, a dinghy can be securely mounted on Weaver SS removable chocks. A new helm seat was bought for the flybridge in 2024. See flybridge equipment list.
