Pickfords and Team Purple triumph
P1 SuperStock UK’s two national powerboat racing titles were decided in Weymouth over the weekend of 15 and 16 September.
Dean Stoneman and his navigator Dean Paling (both from Southampton) won the Blue Riband P1 250 Class in their Pickfords-backed boat, while husband and wife team, Stuart and Sara Cureton, secured the P1 150 Class title for the second consecutive year.
Stoneman and Paling finished a dominant season in style by winning all three races in Weymouth Bay to bring their 2012 tally of wins to a record seven. They enjoyed a massive 43-point advantage over nearest rivals Typhoo, driven by Miles Jennings (Exeter) and Andy Wilby (Fleet), who finished second. Last year’s champion John Wilson (Coleshill, Birmingham) finished in joint third place in his Pertemps-sponsored craft alongside Edox Swiss Watches, driven by Ian Brusby (Doncaster) and Will Nurse (Hayling Island). Just two points separated the second and joint third boats after eight extremely competitive races.
In the supporting P1 150 Class, Team Purple crew, Stuart and Sara Cureton (Lindford, Hants), went to Weymouth trailing rivals David and Kirsty Toozs-Hobson (Arundel) in Macdonald Mermaid, but three dominant wins saw the reigning champions retain their title by ten points. Father and daughter team, Vince and Jade Berridge (Hemel Hempstead), had their most competitive weekend of the season with a trio of second places in Black Magic, vaulting them into an overall third place.
