Description

Built in 1998 and designed by Ian Anderson, CANTARA OF RHU is a rare Seastream 465 and one of only a limited number produced. This hand-built, bluewater cruising yacht features a sea-kindly hull, secure cockpit, and raised deck saloon, offering comfort and visibility below. The cutter rig is easily managed, and the interior includes two double cabins, one twin, and quality joinery throughout. Based on Scotland’s west coast since 2004, she’s been well maintained and wintered ashore annually at Silvers Marine. A standout 15m deck saloon yacht with pedigree, ideal for serious cruising.

Construction

RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.

Overwintering & Routine Maintenance

Annually since 2004 she has been slipped around mid-September and laid up in a purpose boat hanger along with other yachts at Silvers Marine Rosneath. The mast is racked in a mast shed. She has been launched around late-April. For the past 20 years she has then been laid up indoors for over 7 months each year. In 2020 she was not launched. The annual programme of routine preventative and corrective maintenance includes the following:

 

  • In colder months, a dehumidifier and 1/4kw heater are set up internally.
  • Antifouling is pressure washed and Scotbright pad manually scrubbed.
  • Two coats of Micron Extra antifouling biennially.
  • Topside Starbright hull cleaner wash.
  • Topside manual G4 cut followed by resin/wax polish.
  • Chains and anchors are lowered to ground to dry out and repaint depth markings as indicated.
  • Fresh water tank drained.
  • Grey tank and drains – Biological/enzyme drain cleaner added.
  • Both boat and generator engines are winterised by circulating fresh water antifreeze in the raw water systems.
  • Engine oil change.
  • Gearbox oil change.
  • Racor and Perkins diesel filters changed.
  • Engine Perkins oil filter change.
  • Engine raw water impellor changed biennially.
  • Coolant checked and topped up.
  • Coolant has been fully drained and changed 3 times.
  • Generator oil changed biennially.
  • Generator fuel and oil filters changed biennially.
  • Generator impellor changed occasionally.
  • Generator coolant checked and topped up.
  • Bilges cleaned and bilge pumps and float switches checked and cleared.
  • Diesel fuel tank has been opened, checked, and cleaned out on one occasion. Minimal sediment and no evidence of diesel bug.
  • Grey tank has been opened and cleaned out twice.
  • Galley stove removed and thoroughly cleaned.
  • Varnish work and paint work as indicated.
  • Windlass oil change occasionally.
  • Carpets removed and washed.
  • Carpets replaced 4 or 5 yearly.
  • Mast and spars cleaned and polished.
  • Sails to sailmaker to be checked, laundered. repaired and stored.
  • Zinc anodes checked and replaced as necessary.
  • Upholstery. Alcantara panels replaced when worn.
  • Teak decks -   Boracol 5Rh biocide treatment – 2 to 3 yearly.
  • New gas regulator occasionally.
  • Locker catches frequently replaced.
  • Electrical and electronic attention as necessary.
  • Numerous other small jobs as indicated.

Specific Maintenance & Replacements

Much of the routine maintenance was done by the owner otherwise the more complex or detailed tasks were given over to Silvers Marine and other specific contractors. It was fortunate that the electrical and electronic maintenance was done by one interested and well-informed boat electrician. The following specific replacements and maintenance has been done:

 

2005:

  • Generator - new exhaust anti siphon system fitted.

 

2006:

  • New Mastervolt battery charger fitted.
  • New RF Genoa by Nicolson Hughes.
  • Cockpit radio speakers replaced.
  • Fore cabin, heads and side cabin hatches removed and reset with Sikaflex sealant.
  • Domestic battery switch replaced.
  • Fitted stainless steel heat shields to woodwork around galley stove.
  • Fitted deckwash pump with cockpit hose point.
  • Heart charger – new cable to control panel.
  • New lateral cabin cot canvas.

 

2007:

  • Mainsheet traveller replaced with Lewmar size 2 track with line control.
  • Stainless steel masthead flag staff fitted.
  • Chaffed Genoa halliard replaced.
  • Boom and traveller blocks replaced.
  • Fore cabin stanchion leak - fibreglass repair and stained woodwork replaced.
  • Mast electrics wiring fully replaced and fitted with connector plugs including radar wiring junction box.
  • Masthead antennas replaced.
  • Freshwater pump replaced with Para-max 4 - 25psi.
  • Grey tank pump replaced with filter less Jabsco discharge pump.
  • Cracked generator coolant hose replaced.

 

2008:

  • Rudder removed and modified as specified by Ian Nicolson to bring surface area to mid-point of area formula.
  • Stemhead fitting removed and forepeak backplate fitted as specified by Ian Nicolson to give forestay additional support.
  • Original Whitlock pedestal with quadrant and pinion steering replaced with Lewmar Engard pedestal incorporating upgrade Mamba steering system.
  • New in-mast furling mainsail.
  • Topside fender cloth made.
  • New cabin radio with CD and DVD player fitted.

 

2009:

  • New Selden kicker fitted.
  • New forestay turnbuckle with toggle and threadeye.
  • Stainless steel wire inner forestay replaced.

 

2010:

  • Antifouling and underwater basecoat lightly sand blasted off down to gelcoat.
  • 5 coats of International Gelshield 200 applied (green, grey, green, grey and finally grey) followed by antifouling.
  • Galley ventilator and Dorade box renewed.
  • Navigation electronics converted to Raymarine instrumentation.
  • Nav station woodwork modified to accommodate instruments.
  • Grey tank pump switch – 10-volt relay fitted.
  • Grey tank – manual Whale Gulper Urchin fitted with isolation valves.
  • New forward heads macerator fitted.
  • New cable to forward heads.

 

2011:

  • Racor filter – In line vacuum gauge fitted.
  • Mamba steering gearbox serviced and bearings replaced.
  • Pedestal top plate seal replaced, and other points sealed.
  • Outer stainless steel wire forestay replaced.
  • Gearbox output shaft oil seal replaced.
  • New galley stove – Smev CU311 with gimbals.

              

2012:

  • Lofrans windlass control unit replaced.

              

2013:

  • New stainless steel bin lid and bin added to galley.
  • Stainless steel cap, intermediate and lower shrouds replaced.

 

2014:

  • Digital TV - Meos 13.3-inch replacement.
  • Gas locker - gas solenoid replaced.
  • Forward heads seacock changed.

 

2015:

  • Perkins engine – New Serc raw/fresh water intercooler fitted.

 

2016:

  • Whisper Power MSQ6 replacement generator installed.

 

2017:

  • Chronometer – replace quartz clock movement.
  • Shower hoses replaced.
  • Engine - Perkins Coolant tank 105 deg C alarm switch replaced.
  • 4 x Mastervolt MVG 12/200 engine and service batteries.
  • Manecraft prop shaft water seal replaced.
  • Stern tube and skeg cutlass bearings examined- in good order.
  • Engine and gearbox control cables replaced and reset.
  • Gearbox clutch pack replaced.

 

2018:

  • Raymarine – fitted new RS150 GPS Receiver.
  • Perkins engine 4 new atomisers fitted.
  • Perkins primary fuel lift pump replaced.
  • Perkins fuel lift hand pump replaced.
  • Perkins thermostat replaced.
  • Perkins glow plug thermostat replaced.
  • Replaced engine belts.
  • Engine room automatic fire extinguisher replaced.
  • Perkins engine – Vitus 76mm exhaust hose replaced.
  • Fitted second hand ST80 log impellor unit.
  • Replaced kicker gas strut.
  • New sprayhood.
  • New wheel/binnacle cover.
  • New inner jib.

 

2019:

  • New Aquadrive unit fitted along with new shaft thrust bearings.
  • Lorfans windlass 12v 1.5kw motor replaced.
  • Professional topside fine compound polish and wax finish.
  • Vetus bow thruster control panel replaced.
  • 80-amp alternator replaced.
  • Coolant water pump replaced.

 

2020:

  • Eperspacher heater serviced with replacement of heat exchanger, glow plugs and fuel filter.
  • Aft cabin leak from deck fitting – Fibreglass repair.

           

2021:

  • New Seldon mast cover plates fitted.
  • Engine – new starter relay fitted.
  • Shower drain delay switches replaced.
  • Grey tank pump diaphragm and valves replaced.

 

2022:

  • Isotherm Magnum water pump – Valve pack replaced.
  • Inner jib - Schaefer furler drum assembly and bearings replaced.
  • Perkins engine raw water pump replaced.
  • Zodiac dinghy oars replaced. Retractable wheels to dinghy.
  • Dinghy valves renewed.
  • New SS Lewmar/Whitlock throttle and gearbox handle fitted.
  • Galley stove – new spark electrodes fitted.

 

2023:

  • All in good order.

 

2024:

  • All in good order.

 

2025 (Proposed Works):

  • Replace Isotherm fridge compressor.
  • In preparation for sale; professional topsides cut and polish; repaint boot top blue lines.
