Description
RIJORO Wianno Senior 1947 n.108 is a 25-foot (m 7.62) gaff rig sloop built since 1914 on the southern coast of Cape Cod (Massachusetts). But the Wianno Senior is also known as one of the favorite boats owned by President John F. Kennedy and his family, with 8 examples built during the period of RIJORO n.108. Sixty years after his death, many articles remembering his life still feature photos of the future President aboard his Wianno Senior “Victura” in the company of Jacqueline. After the fire at the Manley Crosby shipyard, the Rijoro is one of the few surviving examples from the same era and participated in Italy in the Panerai trophy. Designed for the challenging waters of Nantucket Sound, a stretch of sea battered by strong winds and scattered with sandbanks, the Wianno Senior, with its elegant lines, movable keel, low freeboard, wide stern, and spacious cockpit, remains a boat of great charm on which generations of sailors continue to race. The Wianno Senior was designed to be easily maneuverable, unsinkable, suitable for short waves and sandy shallows of the area. Measuring 25 feet (7.60 meters) long and 8 feet (2.42 meters) wide, with a wide and low freeboard stern, equipped with a movable keel, gaff rig, a small cabin with two berths, and a spacious cockpit, it is a boat not only for racing but also suitable for day outings with families and children. In the early 2000s, the first two wooden Wianno Seniors, Rijoro (hull no. 108 of 1947) and Rapparee (hull no. 127 of 1963), arrived in Italy at Argentario, restored respectively by the Argentario Shipyard. THE SAIL PLAN: The rig, consisting of mast, gaff, and boom, as well as the spinnaker pole, are made of solid Sitka Spruce wood. The deck equipment, including the two small winches on the cabin top, is made of bronze based on original Merriman 1920 designs. To facilitate maneuvers and allow sailing even with a reduced crew. The sail plan consists of a gaff mainsail of 31.6 sqm, a jib of 7.8 sqm, and a spinnaker of 25 sqm. This example is provided with its road trailer.
THE MOVABLE KEEL AND ROAD TRANSPORT
With the keel raised, the boat draws only 75 centimeters, a feature that allows it to beach and moor in places where only inflatable boats can reach. With the keel lowered, the draft reaches 1.80 centimeters. Another advantage of the Wianno Senior is the possibility of road transport.
