Built by Thames Marine of Wakefield to a David Feltham design in 1977. The boat has been in her present ownership since 2002 and during this time she has been day sailed with the occasional over night stay. The engine was replaced in 2011 with a reliable Beta B16 inboard diesel. The interior was reupholstered in 2018 and the furnishings are in excellent condition. She has a comprehensive electronics package including colour chart plotter, GPS and DSC VHF radio. Sails include a main and roller furling genoa. Stack pack for main sail.
GRP constructed yacht built by Thames Marine of Wakefield to a david Feltham design. David Feltham was the man responsible for the extremely popular Cobra Yacht range and the Snapdragon 670. His main aim was to design yachts that were "big" on the inside, easy to sail, but more importantly affordable to the average British yachtsman.
The Mirage 28 is a good example of this concept. At just over 28 feet she has an interior volume more in keeping with a 32 footer from the same era. This is achieved by her generous beam and raised coachroof which, although frowned upon at the time, increases the interior space and more importantly the headroom.
Her topsides have been painted white and there is a little bit of rub mid-ships. This is purely cosmetic. The under water profile is a shoal fin keel giving a draft of 1.40M. With a ballast ratio of just shy of 40%, she is very stable in a seaway and excellent in light airs. Stainless steel bow and stern rails connected by a series of stanchions and double set of coated guardwires. Stainless steel stemhead fitting with anchor roller. Anchor is mounted on deck with chain locker accessible via forward cabin. Large cockpit with locker storage to starboard. Dedicated drained and vented gas locker to port. Removable aft seat. Tiller steering with protective canvas cover. Mooring cleats fore aft and mid-ships/ Aluminium toe rail covers hull to deck join. Bathing ladder mounted to transom.
Engines & Electrics
The engine was replaced in 2011 by a powerful yet economical inboard BETA B16 diesel. This is a 2-cylinder, fresh water cooled unit which has completed 181 hours at time of writing. Twin Disc reduction gearbox driving a stainless steel shaft and 2-bladed fixed propeller.
Bank of 2x12V batteries provide engine start and domestic power. These are recharged via the engine alternator or the onboard smart charger. The vessel has been rewired recently with new 12V panels.
Sails & Rigging
Bermudan sloop rigged yacht with deck stepped aluminium spars. Stainless steel standing rigging and terylene running rigging. Plastimo roller furling head sail system. Slab reefing main. Stack Pack system added within the last 5 years.
Majority of the lines are led aft to the helm making short handed sailing easy and safe.Genoa sheet tracks mounted aft. Self tailing sheet winches within easy reach of helm.
Below decks is in good order with mahogany faced marine ply bulkheads and solid wood trim. Teak laminate floorboard with holly strips in good condition. The upholstery was replaced in 2018 and is in excellent condition.
Main saloon accessed from the cockpit steps incorporated into the engine housing. To starboard is the galley area with removeable easy clean work tops. Here you will find a stainless steel sink, manual pumped fresh water and a top loading ice box. There is a gimballed gas fuelled hob with 2- burners and a grill. Continuing forward is the chart table with drawer storage, chart reading light and 12V switch panels. Next is a 2-seater settee with storage behind and below.
Opposite is the port seating/berth with dining table. The leaves raise either side. Behinfd the settee berth is cupboard storage. Aft is a quarter berth.
Forward of the saloon bulkhead is the heads compartment with marine toilet. Opposite is a sink unit with storage behind.
