The 66 was Oyster’s way of marking the turn of the millennium, with a big and powerful blue water cruiser, with a hull length of very close to 2000cms!
In those 2000cms the 66 has an extraordinary amount of space for a yacht of her size, indeed her accommodation would not shame a yacht six feet longer with five cabins. Three double cabins and two twins with three head/showers. The raised saloon and navigation station permit watchkeeping from inside and provide a wonderful space for dining or entertaining with panoramic views. In turn the raised saloon floor creates an ideal space in the centre of the yacht for the engine, generator, batteries and other machinery, all with good access for maintenance.
There is a further compact saloon or snug forward close to the galley, which is a wonderful and secure design allowing preparation of food and drinks in all weathers, while there are guest double and twin forward cabins with a spacious sail locker in the bow. Aft there are another double and twin cabin, with the generous owner’s stateroom has its own companionway leading out onto the aft deck, which allows great ventilation in warmer climates.
She was also an innovative design on deck; the 66 was the first Oyster to have twin wheels, a feature that allowed a separation between the working and leisure areas of the cockpit, keeping children and non-sailors safe and protected forward while the crew can handle her from the aft end of the cockpit. A powerful cutter rig also had a self-tacking staysail for the ultimate in ease of handling.
The 66 is well proven with circumnavigations, and numerous ocean crossings under the keel. As well as the more usual warm weather sailing, a pair of 66s have cruised Antarctica, possibly the most challenging waters on the planet.
Scorpi 2 is a superb example of a 66, well-kept and cared for by fastidious owners, with ten berths in five cabins and rich teak joinery. In boom furling to her mainsail gives her more power under sail than the alternative in-mast furling set up, and she is well specified for long range cruising. A powerful, but easily handled world-cruising yacht, now ready for her next adventure.
