A new service facility representing a major investment by leading Volvo Penta marine engine dealers, R. K. Marine, is to be opened on the River Hamble near Southampton.

The new centre, which will officially open on March 2, includes a purpose-built workshop to support specialist service and maintenance for the growing population of Volvo Penta IPS powerboat and sports cruiser integrated propulsion systems.

Volvo Penta, which is part of the Swedish-based Volvo Corporation, and a major provider of marine engines and drives to the UK boating industry, is endorsing this investment as an important step forward in boat owner support. Stefan Carlsson, President of Region Europe, will arrive from Sweden to be present at the opening.

The new Hamble-based facility and building will also house a fabrication shop, cleaning bay, specialist tool store and a dedicated training area. As well as supporting IPS technology, R. K. Marine's new centre will offer services for the full range of Volvo Penta engines from 1 litre units for small sail craft and runabouts to 16 litre engines for both leisure and commercial vessels.

IPS is Volvo Penta's innovative propulsion technology that combines an inboard diesel engine with an integrated, forward facing thru-hull drive and propeller system. The unit increases propulsion and fuel efficiency whilst reducing CO2 and noise emissions.

Neil Kimish, managing director of R. K. Marine, says, "This is a major investment for us and demonstrates our faith in the UK boating sector, even in these difficult times. This is also just the start. Phase two, which will include a 40 ton/60 foot capability lifting dock, will become operational later on in the year. This will allow us to lift all vessels within the Volvo Penta IPS power range."
