French sailor Thomas Coville has just set a new solo record for crossing the Mediterranean. Sailing his maxi trimaran, he set the solo record across the Mediterranean sea between Marseille (France) and Carthage (Tunisia) in one day, one hour, 36 minutes and 36 seconds, sailing at an average speed of 17,62 knots over 458 miles.

After the crossing, Colville said: "The Mediterranean is always more difficult than you would expect. Theoretical routing gave 20 to 22 hours. I crossed in 25 hours, which seems simple, but this route is full of traps.

"Among the major difficulties, avoiding capsizing - that night there were all the ingredients to hit the water in the middle of the Mediterranean. I had a little room but it was still very hot twice."

His next challenge will be the transatlantic record between Cadiz (Spain) and San Salvador (Bahamas) on the Columbus Discovery Route.
