  2. Nordhavn 68

    Nordhavn 68

The distinct styling of the 62 has been a Nordhavn hallmark for nearly twenty years, and the 68 captures the essence of this vessel yet it incorporates the latest thinking in design, systems and technology and packages it all into a beamier, heartier hull. The interior is stunning with modern styling and beautiful teak joiner work. And despite the size advantage, this vessel is just as easily managed by a cruising couple without need for captain and crew. Stepping onto the boat, the massive size of the 21-foot wide expanse can be immediately felt. The 68 carries its beam further aft and has a higher freeboard forward, thus providing more room on the inside. Offered in both an asymmetrical and dual walk-around layout, the huge saloon is an ideal gathering area for when the yacht plays host to larger groups. Meanwhile, cooking for the masses is a snap in the large gourmet galley with such features as granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Because the 68 is an aft pilothouse model, the foredeck is open so there are deck hatches for lots of light and ventilation. This is especially noticeable in the full-beam Master Suite and its luxurious head and shower forward. There are full size port lights positioned on either side which show off breathtaking views. Located just two steps down and forward from the saloon/ galley area, the bright and airy cabin offers its owners a pleasant haven for an afternoon nap or good night’s sleep. Like the larger luxurious vessels in the Nordhavn fleet - the 72, 75EYF, 76, 78 and 86 – the Nordhavn 68 is filled with the best equipment as standard including hydraulic bow and stern thrusters, ABT stabilizers, air conditioning, and Stidd helm chairs. “This boat is so featurepacked there is not a regular option sheet for it,” says Streech.

Nordhavn has taken what it does best, building long-range luxury expedition yachts, and incorporated all the fishing features and rigging found on tournament sportfishers to create a yacht that can truly go after any fish in the world. An enormous fishing cockpit, dual 60-gallon baitwells, a 35-cubic-foot deep freeze, plentiful gear and tackle storage and all the rod holders and rigging a deep-sea angler could ever want top a long list of fishing features. The N75 EYF is safer in rough weather when sea conditions force a slower running speed, which is always a major downside to the typical small rudders found on sportfishers (the N75 EYF’s standard stabilizers also promise a comfortable ride in rough seas). Additionally, the EYF’s 22 -foot four-inch beam permits a new Nordhavn standard feature: twin engines. A single screw is not an option. The N75 EYF sports Detroit Series 60 diesels and a cruising-speed fuel burn of 12 to 15 gallons per hour – a trickle compared to a typical sportfisher built for nothing but speed with noisy behemoth diesels guzzling 100 to 200 gallons or more per hour. Another heavy advantage over typical sportfishers is there is no weight penalty for all the equipment and furnishings that make life grand. Dive equipment, jet skis, granite countertops, you name it – the N75 EYF’s full displacement hull allows you to load up with everything you need for fishing adventures that last for months, not hours. Like all Nordhavn yachts, the N75 EYF is a truly semi-custom boat. The interior can be designed to match an owner’s tastes and lifestyle.

Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) has expanded the Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. This new design looks to serve as a stepping stone between the large cruiser and megayacht categories. For the enthusiast who is seeking megayacht-like style and features in a boat that is still able to be managed with no – or minimal – crew, the Nordhavn 96 is the ideal solution. She is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, and incorporates a 10-foot cockpit extension that allows for space bumps in several areas of the boat including below decks in the crew area and lazarette; at main deck level in the cockpit and saloon; on the pilothouse deck with a larger sky lounge or upper master stateroom (depending on layout); and an even more capacious fly bridge. Fuel capacity remains the same, although slight gains in fuel burn are likely due to the N96’s longer water line. Displacement also stays virtually the same. “It is a fairly easy procedure to extend the molds,” says Jeff Leishman, PAE’s Chief of Design. And it is an efficient way to give a customer the additional space they are seeking without the drastic cost of building an entirely new hull. Nordhavn has employed this method of thinking with several of its other models including the N52 (based on the N47 hull), the N60 and 63 (based on the N55 hull), the N68 (based on the N64 hull) and the N76 (based on the N72 hull), and the approach has been a hugely successful one. The stretched out models proved themselves to be so advantageous that, as a result, they have become more popular than their predecessors. And contrary to published reports, there is zero downside to adding hull extensions. Says Leishman: “These types of modifications have actually demonstrated to enhance performance.”

    Nordhavn 72

From the outset of this project, we knew that the Nordhavn 72 would be a boat that would take P.A.E. to the next level. The stylish interior is replete with crown moldings, granite, leather, well-engineered lighting, soffets, the finest appliances, exquisite woodworking and much more. At the same time, the fundamental DNA of Nordhavn is not forgotten. There are numerous handrails, half-inch tempered glass windows, dogged doors, watertight bulkheads and the many other features which are essential for safe operation offshore. Meanwhile, the standard equipment list for the Nordhavn 72 is so complete that no regular options list is provided. Chilled water air conditioning, TRAC stabilizers, bow and stern thrusters, Marquipt davit, wing engine, dry exhaust, windlass and ground tackle, and much more are standard. Add an electronics package, shore boats, and your personal items, and you’re on your way. The highly developed standard AC and DC electrical systems on the N72 achieve a new level of sophistication for Nordhavn and allow for semi-automatic operation of this feature packed vessel by a small crew or even one couple. The standard propulsion configuration of the N72 is classic Nordhavn. The single main engine is the highly respected John Deere 6135AFM in the 500 hp configuration and with its 25,000 hour life expectancy, should outlast most of us. Dry exhaust and keel cooling are standard as is the Lugger wing engine.

    Nordhavn 76

With popularity of the “northwest trawler”-style boat on the rise, PAE set out to create a big modern passagemaker that fused this salty look with the advanced systems of the latest Nordhavns. The result was the Nordhavn 76: developed for those yachtsmen who want an aft pilothouse boat which carries its shore boats on the foredeck. Like our venerable Nordhavn 62, the pilothouse of the N76 is set aft, carries its crane forward and can launch its shore boats off either the port or starboard side. Based on the hull form and specifications of the N72, the simple goal of this model was to create a small superyacht which was true to the rugged ocean going heritage of other Nordhavns while at the same time stunning in her elegance, fit and finish, systems and engineering. Nearly a year was spent in the tooling and mold-building phase of this project to create the hundreds of highly polished molds required to construct this complex boat in gleaming gel coat finished GRP (fiberglass) construction. An interior decorator was commissioned to up the degree of style most megayachts are known for, including crown moldings, granite, leather, well-engineered lighting, and the finest appliances. Though a little more glitzy, there’s no denying that a Nordhavn exists at the heart of this boat. Numerous handrails, half-inch tempered glass windows, watertight doors and bulkheads and many other features essential for safe operation offshore. Like the 72, the fact that this boat is so complete, a regular options list does not exist. Standard on the 76 is chilled water air conditioning, TRAC stabilizers, bow and stern thrusters, Marquipt davit, wing engine, dry exhaust, windlass and ground tackle, and a lot more. Simply add your electronics package, tenders on deck, personal affects you’re ready to go. The standard propulsion configuration of the N76 is classic Nordhavn. The single main engine is the highly respected John Deere 6135AFM in the 500 hp configuration and with its 20,000-hour life expectancy, should outlast most of us.
