She was built by the U.K.’s leading boat builder A.H. Moody and Sons. The designer, Bill Dixon, made her to be a premium blue water cruiser ideally suited to taking a family or a couple round the world and living at anchor.    She is 14.17m long. 4.48m wide and has a draft of 1.61m She has an 82hp Perkins diesel and can easily achieve over 7 knots. Her tanks will accommodate 580 liters of water (plus a water maker) and 530 litres of fuel. INTRODUCTION: (In the owners' words) "We bought this fantastic Moody 471 custom 3 years ago specifically for this adventure. We have sailed her from the UK to New Zealand over the last 16 months. It has been an amazing family adventure for us. We have sailed with our 2 children, 9 and 10 years old. I wanted a Moody because it is a classic, go-anywhere, blue water yacht from the legendary designer Bill Dixon and was built by Britain’s leading yacht builder Moody’s. Bill Dixon designed it to do just what we have done, cruise over long distances with great confidence and comfort. The attention to detail and the engineering that went into these boats can-not be beaten.  Friends of mine had sailed round the world for 5 years in one and had a really fantastic experience - so I was on the lookout for this exact model of boat. It also has a very sea kindly motion which was important for my wife, Christina, who had not done much sailing and suffered from sea sickness on other boats but not this one. We sailed it in the UK and around the English Channel to get to know her better. I have also sailed for many years professionally, teaching the Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster Offshore courses as well as offshore racing around Europe. All my experience informed the extensive refit. The fundamentals of the boat design and build are perfect but before we left I wanted all the systems upgraded and modernized to the latest standards and performance. I wanted nothing given to chance for our family adventure. I lived near the Moody yard and I spent a lot of time in the UK finding great people to help refit her to a very high standard over two years. I wanted to be absolutely sure we could sail safely and very comfortably long distances and get the performance out of the boat when we wanted it. Many of the people who worked on the boat were the original Moody craftsman (shipwrights, riggers, plumbers, engineers etc). Sailing the Moody 471 with the Solent and Cutter rig is a real joy. She is a sailor’s boat in that respect. The rig and sails are set up for one person to easily handle all the sails with lines leading back to the cockpit (two genoas, code zero and mainsail on furlers). With two people it makes it incredibly easy.  When we are short tacking upwind we can either use the staysail in higher winds which makes it a very comfortable ride even on very windy days. Or we use the number 2 (135%) genoa which is set on a furler when we need more power in lighter winds. The cutter staysail is removable, unlike many cutter rigs. When you want the bigger number 2 genoa sail for more power this set up means that it tacks unobstructed by the cutter stay. We did a lot of upwind sailing in Europe so it was important to have good performance and options upwind.  However, the vast majority of our sailing in the last year has been down wind. The Solent rig is exceptional in this regard and she excels downwind. Off the wind, reaching, you can choose from either the Code Zero set on its own furler or the big 165% Genoa set on the forward furler (if the wind strength is higher).  For running downwind the two genoas are set on spinnaker poles (one person can easily rig the spinnaker poles). The wing-on-wing sailing is superb. The boat is perfectly balanced. It’s fast, easy to set-up, extremely easy to handle: the same sail combination and set up can take you from under 10 knots of wind to 50 knots. The stability and control you have does not change through the wind range. Importantly, there is not a need to leave the cockpit. It’s the safest and fastest downwind sailing you can do. Under power, she displays none of the challenges many other ocean going boats have. She is easy to maneuver, turns in her own length and reverses in a straight line. For really tight berthing situations, there is a bow thruster. The powerful 82HP engine can keep her cruising at speed in all weathers and the Bruntons auto prop feathers automatically tuning itself to the engine speed to maximize fuel economy. Her short keel has been a huge advantage for us, allowing us to navigate safely the Pacific reefs and shoals. We can get close in (to be really comfortable in anchorages), tucked away from the wind whilst other boats need to stay further out.  She is a centre cockpit boat which gives great security at sea. It also means that there is a good choice of spaces to socialize in. There are bimini covers and awnings that cover from the mast to the stern of the boat, giving protection against the sun and making it cozy & dry in the rainy Pacific weather conditions. Down below she is spacious and has been ideal for a family and hosting friends. It’s easy to see where the Moody craftsmen got their reputation. No expense was spared when it came to the build quality and the attention to detail in these custom interiors is exceptional.  The main saloon is large, open and airy. The drop leaf table (with a leaf on port and starboard) means the space is very flexible, you can use some or all the seating and host a lot of adults. 4-5 adults can sit each side (we’ve had 10 in comfort sitting round the table). The saloon seating can also convert into a day bed which the children have loved. The Galley is bigger than you find on many boats. The features have been really well thought through to ensure it is safe and uncluttered. Everything is within reach. A big chest fridge (that can also keep items frozen in one corner) means you have everything you need to prepare extensive meals for a lot of people or just a cozy meal for two. There are two sleeping cabins. The master or owners cabin is in the stern and as with all Moody’s it is a big cabin with a big bed. Lots of storage. It is a really nice space to retreat to and has an en-suite heads and shower. There is standing head room throughout the boat from the forward cabin and heads to the stern owner’s cabin. The forward cabin is also en-suite and has 4 bunks. It makes it a very airy and light cabin that is flexible for having more guests. The storage throughout is very well thought through. We have never had a problem stowing away the very large amount of kit we bought along for the family. We even accommodated a full size piano keyboard!    Sadly, we have reached the end of our journey. Our goal was to get to New Zealand. My work had given me an 18 month break to go on this amazing journey with my family. Now it’s time to go back and restart our lives and jobs in the U.K. I hope that we can pass on Banyu Aman (which means water calmness or safetyin old Javanese), we have loved her very much.
