Owners' description is as follows. Orion was originally built in Holland in 1920 as a steam tug boat. It stayed in service until the late sixties. In about 1990 it was taken from basically a bare hull, rub rail to rub rail, and converted into a wishbone schooner for chartering in Europe. The constuuction met all Dutch passenger carrying specifications. She was used in charters for about ten years carrying 12 passengers and a crew of three.
The Orion is easily handled by a couple, which is how she has been used for the last 20 years.
About year 2000 Orion was sailed to Vancouver for chartering in British Colombia. The present owners purchased it there in 2001 and completely rebuilt the interior and had SeaTec shipyard add a bow and stern thruster and complete hydraulics. The boat was then sand blated and painted. All bright work was redone. Since that time the boat has been cruised by a husband and wife team from Vancouver, BC, down the pacific coast, through the canal and through the Caribbean. Orion is presently in Isla San Andres a Colombian island about 200 miles north of the Panama Canal off the coast of Nigaragua.
Orion's hull is rivited steel, her decks/bulwarks are welded steel and the mast are steel with booms made of wood.
There is a huge rear stateroom aft with three bunks and a huge storage space as well as a washing machine and sink.
The pilot house has a captain's chair, navigation table, and an eating table with seating for six.
Forward and below from the pilothouse is the galley with a Force 10 oven, dish washing machine & 12 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer. The counter tops are granite and there is a lot of cabinet space. In this same area there is a full size leather couch with end tables, a dining table with seating for six and a 42" plasma TV concealed in a cabinet.
Forward of the galley/eating/lounging area is a full size bathroom with sink, toilet and tiled shower. Across the passageway is a stateroon with your choice of a single or double bunk.
Forward of this stateroom is the master stateroom with a queen sized bunk, a sink and granite counter top, seperate toilet and tiled shower. There is a large clothes closet with 12 drawers and more drawers under the queen size bunk.
Orion has been well maintained. There are a lot of spares (starter, alternator ect.). The powerful bow and stern thrusters make the boat easy to maneuver while docking. It is easy to back straight for med' mooring and can easily aligned parallel to a dock and then move directly sideways to go along side a dock.
All new batteries onboard; 2 8d's for starting, 2 banks of 4 - 6volt batteries with a total of 380 ampere hours for the house batteries.
Portable gas powered bilge pump on deck and a hydraulic emergency pump in the engine room.
Also, Orion has stablizing booms and stablizing paravanes.
