Description

Dehler have an established history of producing visually appealing, slippery hulled performance cruiser which are also popular with club racers. With its impressive design pedigree, coming from the board of Judel/Vorlijk & company, the Dehler 32 has gained a reputation as a rewarding boat to sail, delivering good performance at all points of sail while being well mannered enough for those looking for a quick short handed cruiser.

If your looking for performance cruiser which is also a practical cruising yacht without the complications of twin rudders, carbon spars and unattractively wide sterns look no further.

DEALANACH (gaelic for lightning) still with her original owners is a nicely presented one owner example of this 6 berth, two cabin design. Specified from new with the 'Cruiser Pack' from the builder she benefits from Eberspacher diesel heating, 60ltr fridge, holding tank, electric anchor windlass and full Garmin instrument pack including autopilot. Cruised predominately with just two aboard she has proved to be a great fun cruiser capable of making quick passages without tiring her crew.

Currently afloat and in commission on her mooring in Lochaber viewing is by appointment.

Owners Comment

We first viewed the newly designed Dehler 32 at the 2011 Southampton Boat Show and immediately singled her out for the looks of the boat and cruising potential. Having a test sail on the Solent confirmed our initial impressions and we took delivery in spring of 2012.

Dealanach offers excellent cruising. Her existing sail combination with our recently purchased (2015) asymetric sail means she offers fantastic sailing. She is very well behaved offering excellent performance in all wind conditions. Although we don’t race she clearly has the potential to be an excellent club racer. She is easily sailed with two on board and the bonus of very comfortable and warm accommodation is always welcome at the end of the day.

We sailed the boat on the Clyde for the first year and then moved her north to her current mooring at Ballachulish. We have cruised all over the Hebrides(inner and outer) and enjoyed many nights on board.

Reluctantly we have decided to sell as we can't commit sufficient time to sailing her but know that this boat will give others a huge amount of pleasure in the future.

Press Reviews

'Some boats just seem to hit the right note, and to my mind the Dehler 32 is one of them.

Here's a cruiser/racer that's remarkably forgiving and in relative terms not expensive. Yet she's fast, responsive, fun to sail and I think we'll find a competitive race boat.

Rather than make her faster and more skittish, her designers chose moderate hull proportions and a relatively deep canoe body to encourage good behavior. They also stuck to an iron keel and aluminium rig in the interests of keeping the price down.

Every boat is a compromise, but as compromises go in terms of handling, performance and price, this is one of the best I've seen in a long time.'

David Harding. Practical Boat Owner #543, January 2012. 'Dehler 32 - Where fast meets friendly'

Construction

Hull

  • GRP hand laid sandwich construction with end grain balsa core
  • Laminated with hydrolyses proofed polyester resin. Outer skin of laminate consolidated with vinylester resin.
  • Internal bulkheads bonded to hull
  • Internal strucutral matrix laminated to hull, distributing loading from keel and rig into hull laminate.
  • Cast iron keel with stainless steel keelbolts
  • Elliptical balanced spade rudder

Hull finished in white gelcoat with blue sheerband and boot topping lines. Below the waterline the boat is configured with deep keel and deep balanced spade rudder. The underwater hull is finished in a dark blue antifouling.

Deck

  • GRP hand laid sandwich construction with end grain balsa core.
  • Aluminium refinforcement plates bonded into deck moulding in way of all fittings.
  • Moulded non-slip panels on side decks.
  • Laid teak deck panels in cockpit and on coachroof.
  • Tinted perspex portlights.

Spars and Rigging

  • Keel stepped, twin spreader, 9/10ths fractional rig.
  • All spars by Selden.
  • Furlex TD200 furling system for jib.
  • Selden rod kicker.
  • Selden detachable bowsprit for Asymmetric Cruising Chute
  • Harken 32:1 adjustable Dyneema backstay.
  • Harken adjustable genoa tracks
  • Harken mainsheet system
  • Spinlok rope clutches.
  • LED Masthead Navigation Lights.

The fractional rig with large mainsail and high aspect genoa combine to produce a rig which is capable of powering the boat along very effectively. With reefing lines for both the genoa and mainsail lead aft to the cockpit the rig can easily be handled by a short handed crew from the safety of the cockpit. As you would expect with a modern rig such as this halyards and adjustable backstay are of Dyneema. Standing rigging is of Dyform type stainless steel wire with roll swaged terminals.

Winches

  • Primary Winches - 2 of Harken 40ST
  • Halyard Winches - 2 of Harken 35ST

Sails and Canvas Work

  • Mainsail - North Sails. Dacron, cross cut. 2 reefs. (2012)
  • Genoa - North Sails. Dacron, cross cut. Blue UV strip. (2012)

Both the main sail and genoa were professionally valeted by Owen Sails in winter 2015/16.

  • Sprayhood. - Blue acrylic fabric. (2012)
  • Mainsail Cover - Stackpack type cover with mast boot. Fitted with lazyjacks. (2012)

On Deck

  • Moulded side decks with non-slip textured paneling
  • Self draining anchor locker
  • Laid teak coachroof top
  • Laid teak cockpit sole and seat tops
  • Jeffa full width stainless steel steering wheel

On deck the prowess of Judel & Vrolijk in designing sleek and functional performance sailing yachts is evident everywhere. The foredeck is kept flush, with the anchor windlass  concealed below deck level within the anchor locker and the mooring cleats outboard on the toerail. The coachroof smoothly rises up from the foredeck running aft with the central section finished in laid teak providing a pleasing contrast to the white moulded finish elsewhere. Again thought has been given to aesthetics with the lines being lead aft under moulded covers leaving the coachroof top clear of obstruction.

The wide aft cockpit provides bench seating forward of the wheel which is located to the aft end of the cockpit space. Halyards and reefing lines are lead to banks of Spinlok clutches either side of the companionway with Harken winches on both sides. The primary winches are mounted outboard of the coamings towards the cockpits forward end. Spanning the full width of the cockpit immediately forward of the pedestal the Harken mainsheet system allows the helmsman to trim the sail while sitting out with the helm or keeps a dedicated main trimmer clear of the primary winches if racing. The full width hide covered Jeffa wheel provides the helmsman with an excellent view forward when sitting out.

Below Decks

The accommodation below decks is laid out in the style which has now become something of a standard for sub 35', aft cockpit production yachts. A practical living space utilising the midships area to create an open plan living space while maximising use in the end of the boat to provide two separate cabins. The joinery work is of teak with a satin finish, upholstery in a rich blue fabric and headlinings moulded in a white finish keep the interior feeling light and spacious. As you would expect from a single owner, lightly used boat the upholstery and joinery are all fresh and in good condition.

The forepeak provides a double V-berth beneath which the water tank is accommodated with some additional storage space also. A standing area for changing etc is provided at the aft end of the cabin with shelved storage lockers outboard port and starboard.

Contained within a fabric cover boot the keel stepped mast runs through the saloon at the forward end of the centrally mounted drop leaf table. Bench settee style seating runs the length of the saloon converting to single bunks with the back rests removable to create some additional bunk width. Storage is provided around the saloon with cave lockers beneath the settees and outboard behind the settee backs, opening lockers are provided above the seating outboard with two additional drawers at the back end of the dropleaf table.

A forward facing chart table is provided to starboard of the companionway with dedicated navigators seat. The ships switch panel, plotter and VHF are mounted outboard of the table and all easily accessible from the navigators seat.

Opposite is the compact galley appointed with everything required to cater for a full crew. Gas stove, large single stainless steel sink, top loading fridge with infill section. Storage is provided beneath the work top and cooker with further storage outboard.

Appointed as the master cabin the aft cabin on the port side cleverly uses the space beneath the cockpit to provide a spacious double berth. As with the forepeak the cabin provides a standing space forward with a storage locker outboard.

The heads compartment is finished in an easily cleaned moulding with a sink and vanity unit at the forward end with the manual Jabsco heads aft. The heads can discharge either overboard or to the onboard holding tank with discharging via deck outlet or overboard. Storage is provided within the heads above and below the vanity unit with a separate wet hanging area at the aft end.
