General description

Shearmyste is an aluminium ketch built to a Laurent Giles design by Thrislington, Newton Aycliffe and launched in 1984.  She was originally designed as a pilot ketch but has since been modified to remove the second (internal) helming station.  She completed the ARC in 1992.  The hull was thickness-checked in 2013 and all measurements recorded were between 5 and 6mm (pre-purchase survey).  The galley was replaced from original between 2006 and 2013 (by previous owner).  The current owner has replaced the ceiling in the saloon and master cabin with cedar (with modern thermal insulation).  The master cabin bed has been re-modelled to afford a 6ft x 6ft berth.

The flow-through of the boat is as follows:

Steps down from the deck saloon lead:

To the rear – entrance to engine room with workshop through to the master suite with en suite head (no shower).

To the bow – nav station to starboard and galley to port, then the second head with shower to starboard and twin bunk quarters to port.  At the bow there is the final berth currently two singles but could be converted easily to a double with an insert.

The saloon has a permanent dining area that can seat four (at a push) but also has an additional removable table that can seat three-four persons.

She has a huge amount of storage space in accessible cupboards/drawers and under seating and within the large engine room which affords access around the engine and all services.

Mast and rigging

Two painted, deck-stepped, aluminium alloy masts are fitted, both with in-mast furling and stainless steel standing rigging. Forestay, double-groove rotary furling is fitted. Staysail fitted in board of the headsail.

  • Stay sail – currently set for light wind sail and storm sail
  • Main sail – in mast reefing – all lines returned to cockpit
  • Mizzen – in mast reefing – all lines operable from helm/cockpit
