Description

Tagus is a very nicely presented example of the Moody 29 class, even by modern production boat standards she offers a massive internal volume with a full bodied hull form creating a spacious cruiser with good dependable sailing characteristics.

Built between 1980 and 1983 the Moody 29 was an evolution of the larger, very popular Angus Primrose designed Moodys. She shared all the now iconic features of her larger sisters, flared bow, blue shear band to break up relatively high topsides and the recessed foredeck. The designs were all a step change from the more traditional 1970's cruising yachts, having stood the test of time much better than other designs of the time they now offer very reasonably priced, spacious and sturdy cruising yachts.

Now afloat and in her berth at Ardfern she is seriously for sale with the owners health preventing any further use of the boat.

Construction

Built as production GRP boat building became more refined this generation of Moody benefits from the heavy weight traditional GRP constrcution methods along with the refinment of the moulding process. The results were substantial cruising yachts, finished with some of the finest quality materials, standing these boats in good stead for a long service life.

The hull is constructed of a single piece GRP moulding finished externally in white gelcoat with a blue sheerband cleverly breaking up the relatively high topsides. The hul is still finished in the original gelcoat while the sheerband has been repainted. Below the waterline the boat has previously had a preventative epoxy treatment over which the current owner has applied a coppercoat type anitfouling.

In a similar fashion the deck is of a single piece GRP moulding construction finished externally with gelcoat. Lightly textured non-slip panels are moulded into the deck and finished in a pale blue gelcoat to contrast against the white.

The boat was surveyed for insurance purposes in early 2017 and a copy of that survey is available for interested parties.

On Deck

The decks are in very good condition with the finish overall still clean and crisp.

The Primrose trade mark recessed foredeck sees the windlass and forward mooring cleats all neatly positioned below the main deck level. The manual windlass is fitted with a sensible cover and self stows the anchor chain directly into the chain locker below the forepeak bunk. Immediately aft of the recessed foredeck the coachroof gently rises up to the mast step with a baby stay chainplate located at the aft end of the foredeck hatch.
A second deck hatch aft of the mast step provides light to the main saloon. Solid timber grab rails run the length of the coachroof super structure, providing crew a stout hand hold when moving along the side decks. Outboard substantial guardwires run the length of the boat.

With a sprayhood forward, deep moulded coamings and spraydodgers secured to the guard wires the deep self draining cockpit provided crew members with a very well protected enviroment regardless of the weather. From the tiller the helmsman can easily operate both the mainsheet and primary winches which makes single handed or short handed sailing much easier. A large amount of stroage is provided around the cockpit with a deep locker under the port seat and additional locker space accessible beneath the sole.

Below Decks

The Primrose designed Moodys at the time of their build offered significantly more internal volume than designs from the 1970's and indeed still compare favorably against modern designs.

The forepeak provides two single berths in a V-berth formation with central infill section converting the berth to a reasonably sized double. Cave lockers overhead provide storage with additional space provided in bin type lockers beneath the bunks.

With doors to separate it from both the forepeak and main saloon the heads compartment runs athwartships. Appointed with Jabsco marine toilet, wet locker, basin with manual faucet and vanity unit.

The saloon area is very generously sized for a boat of 29' and with the table folding up flat against the main bulkhead provides a large open space with bench type settees running along both port and starboard sides. The huge saloon table folds down and creates a massive working surface allowing both saloon settees to be utilised for dinning. Both settees convert to single berths.

Located at the port aft end of the living space the compact galley is appointed with everything required to cater for a full crew and benefits from a having recent had the cooker replaced. Galley equipment includes top loading icebox, gas cooker (2 burner, grill & oven), single sink, manual faucet.

Opposite the chart table is located, with the navigator sitting at the forward end of genrous quarter berth when working at the table. Again for a boat of 29' the working space provided is generous with plenty of storage spaces readily to hand along with the ships switch panel, VHF, GPS and nav instrument repeater.

Concealed beneath the removable companionway step moulding the engine is easily accessible with the moulding removed.
