With a production run spanning 20 years and over 200 examples being produced in that time the Nicholson 35 is something of a modern classic. Traditional lines and a high quality finish create a design which it easy on the eye, rewarding to sail and pleasant to be aboard.

Construction

Built by the highly regarded Camper and Nicholson yard in Gosport the Nicholson 35's were constructed in a traditional method with hand consolidated GRP lamainates for both the hull and deck mouldings. In this era GRP mouldings were massively over engineered and as such the mouldings are far thicker and more resiliant than you would find on modern GRP boats.

Hull

The hull has traditional lines with a long encapsulated fin keel and full length skeg hung rudder offering improved performance against other long keel designs of the day. During the production run of the design Camper & Nicholson revised the design and form of the rudder blade. The modified design increased its length to provide better performance when hard pressed and also going astern. Trogon benefits from having had her rudder blade professionally modified in accordance with the builders instructions. Below the waterline the hull is finished in a red antifouling. Above the waterline the hull has been painted in Awl-Grip royal blue, close to the original gelcoat colour, with a gold cove line.

Deck

Constructed in the same heavy duty manor as the hull the deck moulding is still finished in the original eggshell gelcoat. On deck moulded non-slip panels provide grip under foot. In the cockpit the moulding has been finished in the traditional style with solid teak trim and sole grating.

Stout pulpit and pushpit railings are joined with guardwires running the length of the boat, all new stanchions were fitted in 2016. Teak grabrails run the full length of the coachroof.

A new all stainless steel twin roller stemhead fitting was fitted in 2006 the Lofrans Cayman 88 electric windlass is mounted on the foredeck centrally forward of the moulded stroage locker, anchor rode self stows in the chain locker below decks. The raised coachroof runs aft to the cockpit coaming largely un-interrupted with only the ventilators, mast hole and teak cradle fitted for liferaft storage aft of the mast.

Protected by a deep cockpit coaming the cockpit provides a great space for the crew wither beating to windward off shore of relaxing comfortable in a quiet anchorage. The large cockpit lockers provided on both sides of the cockpit are topped with teak faced panels left in the natural grey finish, all tops having been replaced in 2012. At the forward end of the cockpit seating is provided for crew with deep coamings creating a deep and well protected area. The mainsheet spans the full width of the cockpit aft of the seating with the binnacle directly aft of this. The helmsman has a dedicated space aft of the wheel with a seat provided and excellent vision forward. A large volume of storage is provided with lockers on both port and starboard sides and beneath the helm seat aft.

Below Decks

Being a MKI version of the design the layour below deck differs from the later versions with no pilot berth provision and an aft facing chart table.

The forepeak provides two well proportioned single berths in a V-berth layout, a central infill section with cushion converts the bunk into a doulbe berth if required. Forward a bin type locker provides some sail storage while the locker space under the aft ends of the berths is accessible through fold down doors. The fuel tank and pump assembly for the cabin heater is mounted under the starboard berth.

Immediately aft of the forepeak spanning the full width of the boat the walk-through heads compartment provides all required amenities for life aboard. Sliding doors close of the compartment from both the forepeak and main saloon areas. The Lavac Zenith sea toilet is located to port while to starboard a vanity unit is provided with sink and pressurised hot and cold water faucet which also functions as a shower head with the heads area self draining.

Of generous proportions the main saloon is an open plan layout with no partition of space between the main bulkhead and companionway creating a bright and spacious feel. The internal joinery is constructed of GRP mouldings finished with varnished teak trims and fittings. Bench type seating is provided along both sides of the saloon with a drop in section creating a small double berth to port while to starboard is a generous single with pilot berth outboard. The large chart table is located at the aft end of the port bunk with the navigator using the aft end of the settee when sitting at the table facing aft. A large volume of chart storage is provided within the table while the ships switch panel, GPS and radar display are all easily accessible. A good selection of storage lockers are provided within the saloon, outboard of the seating including a dedicated drinks locker with in built bottle and glass storage and a large dedicated wet locker is provided to port of the companionway.

To starboard of the companionway the compact galley is laid out in an L-shape with work surfaces provided either side of the two burner gas cooker. With the galley a number of full height lockers below the work surface provide storage with additional lockers outboard and a top opening coolbox.

The boat is fitted with the original Perkins 4.108, 4 cylinder naturally aspirated marine diesel engine. Having been professionally maintained on an annual basis throughout the current ownership and has been reliable and with the companionway steps removed access is generally good. Installed with the hydraulic drive configuration the engine sits under the cockpit sole driving a hydraulic pump with the drive motor and stern gear located further forward beneath the cockpit sole.

The stern gear from the hydraulic drive motor aft is of the standard shaft type configuration with stainless steel shaft and fixed two blade bronze propellor. The shaft exits the hull at the aft end of the keel with very little shaft exposed beyond the cutlass bearing protecting the shaft and prop.

Ships Batteries

A basic battery monitor gauge is fitted at the ships switch panel to show the battery percentage of charge remaining. The ships batteries comprise of two single lead acid type batteries of approximately 110Ah capacity with both being able to function as either engine or domestic batteries.
