A very smart and tidy example of this well known and highly regarded day boat which is still raced today with active fleets in Suffolk and Scotland. Recently updated with new sails, new covers and a roller furling headsail, she comes with a recent galvanised road trailer and everything needed for sailing this summer.
The Loch Long design is a 21ft wooden sloop rigged keelboat. The design was commissioned by members of Loch Long Sailing Club to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and to replace their existing sailing craft with a low cost design which was capable of safe use in the local conditions found on Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde.
The lines of the Swedish ‘Stjambat’ were adapted by James Croll to add a counter stern, alter construction from clinker to carvel and allow a permanent backstay to be fitted.
Built by J Colquhoun & Sons of Dunoon on the Clyde in 1939 she is listed as Sail No 39.
Well over 100 were built of which some 70 are still alive with an active class on the Clyde and at Aldeburgh in Suffolk.
In the recent past she was based in Cornwall where the then owner had the cuddy rebuilt. More recently in 2014 John Jones of Classic Sailboats replaced the deck edging with iroko cover-boards which is very attractive, splined the shear strakes seams where they had opened in the sun and she is now a very dry boat.
In present knowledgeable ownership she has been up-graded with new sails complete with covers and boom tent, new reefing headsail gear, new running rigging amongst other things making her a very smart example of the class. She replaced the owner's previous yacht, a Tumlare with quite a deep draught but sadly even her draught of less than a meter is proving to be the wrong design for sailing from his Welsh home port so the next boat will have to be able to take the ground.
Carvel planked in 19mm Oregon pine, copper fastened to steam-bent oak timbers 30mm x 15mm @170mm centres.
